Be your own boss

In my country, there is nothing as good as being your own boss because finding a job is the most hardest task here in Nigeria because everything is base on your connection.

Source

If you have a dream of working in a big firm, before you started looking for a work in a private firm first asked yourself how connected you are and at times your luck might work for you.

Looking for a government work is another problem because those in charge of giving you the work will asked for what you can not earn in six months. There are lots of graduates that are unemployed and it is not because they are not competent or qualified but because they don't have the money the employer request from them.

At times, the employer will not employ those they are supposed to employ because they think they are over qualified. They think they might steal their position if their is to be a screening later on so this leaves many competent and qualify graduates unemployed.

Since getting a job is something people see as impossible, everybody is looking for another means of surviving. Those that were able to gather some capital started their own business and some engaged in learning an hand work and some are into hard labor.

Doing my own business is the best thing I have ever done, there is no compulsory resuming time and I can close whenever I want and it also gives me a peace of mind and there is balance in work and life matter. If someone can balance both work and life matter and know how to differentiate work from personal matter, they can be a great boss on their own.

It is not all of us that can have our own business because the key to start a business is capital and you maintain your resources is another thing and what makes a successful business is consistency.

Thanks to @tergan for the initiative of this community, welcome back and I hope you enjoy your vacation.

I can't really say that which one is easy. Getting a job is not easy and starting a business is a task on his own.
Thank you for sharing your opinion.

Sounds like employers are going to start learning to respect their employees if the employees leave and do better without them.

Paying to get a job is so annoying and when it comes to connection, it a meal ticket to the rich.

And it's funny how some will now ask for work experience, for jobs they have sworn not to offer to people.
Then how will one get that experience.
They can't even encourage trying you for sometime to see your capabilities.
Even with the work experience asked, one will still end up getting directions and how it's done there.

So, why all the fuss?

I wonder, they make finding job more frustrating when they asked for 8 years working experience from a fresh graduate, from where did they want them to get that

Asking for work experience is annoying to be sure because how can you get experience if you can't get a job?

When I was looking at job postings in the Philippines they had requirements that made me shake my head in disbelief.

To work in McDonalds I saw a posting that made me cringe:

Requirements:

  1. Degree in business (*really?)
  2. References, CV, and work experience in related field (fair enough)

but the ones I just thought were crazy:

  1. Pleasing looks for the front counter
  2. Submit to "leg check" to ensure looking good in skirt/dress
  3. 158 - 168cm tall between the ages of 22-26

I mean seriously?

Wanting experience I understand. But only hiring people who "look good" that's very poor in my opinion.

(Note: that was a job posting I saw years ago....I'm hoping things have gotten better by now)

Wow
That's crazy.

I know they do the good looking and tallness rating here, when you apply for ushering and modeling jobs.

Truth is most jobs requirements are so annoying and unbelievable.

The only job that I know in Canada where you "pay" to get into the job is as a longshoreman (dock worker). A job where you don't need any special education of skills and the average wage is $90,000HBD (far more than what tradesman or university graduates make).

I think the 'connections' thing is universal. The best jobs get offered to people in your circle of influence.

Even at my job, my employer prefers to offer jobs to friends or family of current employees. However, he has a good reason. 1) He wants the workplace to have a friendly atmosphere and its easier to be friendly with people you know and 2) He wants people to work diligently and it is more embarrassing to be a bad worker and have your friends or family know it :)

Here in my country, to get any well pay job is like fighting a war, they won't allow family or friend to work in the same company reason best know to them and the riches us their money and connection to get all the good job for their family even if they are not qualify and left those that are qualified but have no money to be laborer.

Yeah. The Philippines (where my wife is from) is often like that. Unfortunately it isn't good for the country. Incompetent workers lead to incompetent / uncompetitive country. Not good. Things are changing (slowly) in the Philippines. Hopefully your country follows.

I also hope so, they should let those that are competent to the work and not for just connection
