FILM SETTING: VILLAGE STYLE

No movie is shot in a vacuum. As a matter of fact, no form of entertainment especially movie is shot in a vacuum. The properly communicate the purpose of a movie which may be for purpose of entertainment, information, history, etcetera has everything to do with the setting of such a piece.

WHAT IS SETTING
According to my own little Understanding, a setting is the geographical and time location where a movie is shot. It could be anywhere. A house, a city, sky, forest, e.t.c. The underlining word here is the PLACE. The choice location of a movie happen to be the setting.

Setting is very important to a movie production because it has almost everything to say about the movie. It is the first centre of attraction before any movie.

SETTING IS AN INSTRUMENT OF ATTRACTION
Do you ever wonder why people fast forward movies before they decide to watch it? To observe the setting whether it is an attractive one or not. Many people at the commencement of a movie would know whether to continue watching or cease. This is because the setting from the beginning is either appealing or not.

Let us take for example, you want tk do a movie about how the colonial masters came into Nigeria, took control and ran their administration. You can imagine the kind of setting to use. To be practical, let us look at the Movie half of a yellow sun. Without that setring used in that movie, kt would be unattractive.

MY BEST SETTING IN A MOVIE
For me, I prefer local village setting to city setting. My main reason is because village setting brings the movie to reality. Maybe because I am African, but I feel local settings are the best. This is basically because of culture and tradition. History and morals. Most movies which are created in local settings often feel real and alive.

Moreso, natural materials are used in local settings which makes me see what is happening in real life surface in movies. Village setring goes further with natural life. The use if rivers, use of local attire, e.t.c.

Local settings also refresh our minds about our customs and tradition. Myths and legends that really teach about history and morals. It is always a pleasure for me to see Village settings because i see the promotion of our own. Village setting is an opportunity to show the world nature.

Finally, local or village settings feels really natural and good. I will like to mention some movies with local settings such as Brotherhood, King of Boys, Jagun Jagun, Merlin, Mr. Bones, and several others. These movies have really made history and i am very optimistic that the setting had an important role to play while they were selected among the best movies made.

Not that I hate city settings, but movies with city settings don't really seem realistic to me. When I watch movies with local settings, I see reality and creation of art. When I watch movies with city settings, I just see art only.

This is my response to weekly contest in the #hivenaija weekly prompt.

Ahh. I understand your plight about the realistic setting of the place. It gives us a homely feeling especially when it’s a home based movie. Hehe

Exactly. City movies are often fictitious. They are how ever creative.

I also love village settings a lot it feels homely for me and speaking our indigenous language fluently is also heavenly. Like in the movie Jagun Jagun I learnt a lot about Yoruba language and proverbs

Definitely. Those movies make us see the reality of our Culture and Traditions instead of being heard from parents.
