Our very first washing machine arrived by truck in Pramaoy, so we hopped in the Ape and headed down the mountain to get the goods.

Something the wife and I have always wanted is a washing machine, and now that we're finally cashing out our HBD, it is one of the first things we purchased. Unfortunately the nearest shipping destination was Pramaoy, so we had to make a trip back to town just for this item. Along the way I made sure to stop at a massive tree that I've been thinking is hollow inside.
I pulled over as I neared the tree site, and upon closer inspection it was actually hit by lightning, and what I thought was a shadow was actually burnt areas. I guess my dream of a secret hollow tree hideout will have to remain a dream for now.
Don't Forget Routine Maintenance 👨🔧
When we arrived in Pramaoy we stopped by our rental room to turn off the water, close the circuit breaker, and give the key back to our landlord. When I was in the room I noticed an oil change sticker for my Ape that I had peeled off and stuck to the door. It's almost impossible to read now, but I think I'll be changing the engine oil at 4,348 km.
Washing Machine An Easy Load 👌
Hard to believe I've already put 4,000km on the Ape, but so far so good, and it's proven to be a reliable and efficient family vehicle. By the end of the year it will have already paid for itself in all the saved bus, taxi, and transport fees we would've spent without the Ape. We stopped by the bus station to get our washing machine, got a few things in the market, and then dashed back to the mountains.

It's the rainy season here in Cambodia, and the river changes almost instantly with the the fluctuations in rainfall. From muddy to crystal clear in 24 hours, I always love checking in on the river to see how it's changed and how it's flowing.
I should mention I'm a former whitewater rescue technician and paddler, and I can't help but imagine how I'd paddle it if I had access to a kayak. It would be very possible during highwater conditions, but not with the flow like in the above photo.

When you live somewhere very remote like us, sellers of various kinds often drive by with a speaker blasting out information about what products they have for sale. You can get everything from soy sauce to a bed frame if you keep your ears and eyes open, and that's how we scored a "doang ktih," translated literally as "coconut milk" in English.
This variety of coconut is sometimes 3 or 4 times more expensive than regular varieties, and it is used in a very well-known coconut shake that is hard to find. Cambodians will pay several dollars for a coconut shake made from a "doang ktih" variety, so we might as well be growing the more expensive coconuts right?

In our place, things like that happen very often, namely being struck by lightning.
That's why our parents told us not to take shelter under a tree when it rains or thunderstorms, because the tree's habit is to be patient with lightning.
And most of the trees that are struck by lightning will immediately die, even in a few days all their leaves will fall.
It is incredible, I've often seen tress struck by lightning completely burn, but this one survived and still stands strong.
It's true that all housewives really want a washing machine, because the job of washing is a tiring thing for women...
Sometimes I do the washing too, so it's a big help for all of us. We might also be able to wash the clothes of neighbors for a little extra money too.
The weather in Cambodia and in Aceh at the moment is much different, if Cambodia is in the rainy season, in Aceh where we have not rained for a long time, even a lot of land is dry and we are having trouble finding mushrooms.
I'm glad you guys have happiness in your new place, I'm curious about the washing machine that you bought, it must be of high quality, I must immediately buy a washing machine like the one you bought for my wife, my wife has wanted it too, but I say please be patient because My HBD is not enough for that yet.

We couldn't afford a new machine, but there was an online business in Phnom Penh selling secondhand Japanese washing machines, and we got a really good deal. Coconuts in Cambodia can be free or very cheap, but it depends on the area. Here where we live there are few coconuts, so they are very expensive, but that is a good reason to grow and sell them.

I have traveled 4000 KM, I don't know if the vehicle has traveled how many Kilometers to replace the OIL cylinder.
For the Ape, 3,000 to 5,000km is the recommended oil change interval, but I like to do maintenance earlier than scheduled because we make our tuk-tuk work very hard.

The best part that this expensive variety of coconut is also a dwarf species, so I won't have to risk my life to pick a few sweet treats from the tree.
Ah that's good to know hahaha and I think you don't have to wait a long time before it gives any fruits.
Living on a boat means no washing machine for me. I'm excited on your behalf because I know how much I miss the luxury of having one. I have to ask, how does the coconut palm variety affect the flavour or flesh to make it more desirable?
It's our first machine, so we're not even sure what we'll do with all the extra free time provided by this modern appliance. The variety we are growing can sometimes sell for as much as $3 per coconut, expensive by any country's standards. I've eaten and drank many varieties here, but the standard coconut is often 35 to 75 cents throughout the country, and this one's higher price is because it has a very milky taste, making it more ideal for curries, desserts, fruit shakes, etc.
I'm sure there is a maintenance job, path to lay or porch to fix to fill in a little of that free time lol. Also, who knew there were so many varieties of coconuts.
I'm in love with finding not-tall coconut tree species, cause I'm not eating if I can't pick it from a ladder 😉.

I never planted coconut trees. But the son and granddaughter love to eat coconut And we have to buy coconuts to eat. coconut price is not expensive But I don't know what variety.

The washing machine is a real life changer. Before COVID, apparently this area where we live had mostly Thai fruits and veg, but since COVID closed the border, the economy is changing, and because this is the mountains, we have to source many things from hours away. I can't wait until the border opens and we go to Trat for easier shopping.
Yes, a washing machine is a must for any family. A washing machine would be the first electrical appliance I will buy, along with a rice cooker 😄
It's such a help having a machine like this to take the workload away from us. We don't have a rice cooker because we don't cook with aluminum, and finding a stainless steel rice cooker is a bit hard. I have always used a pressure cooker after an Indian friend gave me this tip many years ago, but my family doesn't like to use a pressure cooker because they can't check on the rice, and also the pressure cooker can't keep the rice warm.
Oh yes I have an Indian friend who recommended using a pressure cooker to cook rice. But I have never tried it myself.
It does suit longer grain and brown rice better than short and/or sticky varieties, so easy to accidentally overcook short grain rice with a pressure cooker.
Your wife must be very happy that you bought a washing machine. You all can save both time and effort. I was wondering whether your new house have electricity to operate the machine?
We do have electricity here, although not many amps and not very reliable. I think if we used two big machines at the same time, we'd possibly trigger the circuit breaker's overload safety shut-off. I am not sure whether to go forward with redoing and upgrading the whole electrical system here, or setting up each little cabin with its own solar water tanks, solar panels, and batteries.
I really like it all the new and good varieties than the usual varieties. Hopefully this variety is superior to the usual variety.
This is the best coconut in Cambodia, and most Cambodians agree, so they will pay a lot for them.

It is a relief to have it, it'll definitely save us a lot of time. At least this one is not in Japanese language, that would take some memorization.

More modern, more features, but at least this one's old enough it doesn't need to scan my eyes or need to connect to my phone with bluetooth 😁.
Washing machine will save your time many hours. That is good stuff for a family. Growing coconuts need years to get harvest. I see that there are some spaces in your land. I think you can try with vegetables farming. That is a fun activity in the day.
The seller told us the variety of coconut we purchased bears fruit in 3 years, so we hope to be eating and drinking very soon. Once we have the erosion under control and a few more truckloads of dirt, we will try to make space for a garden.
Slowly but sure all appliance will come home to make everyday become easier ;).
We don't need too many appliances, but the water here is freezing cold, so one day I would like to have a hot water shower heater.
First, the lightning doesn't kill the tree. The greens on top of the branches stated it's not hollow. So, that black colour area does looks like a hole, but it has to be a burnt mark.
I'm not exactly sure if I'm looking at the right stuff where you describe some one selling doang ktih, but the plant you guys planting in is a banana tree? Sorry am a little confused.
That tree gave me an optical illusion from the road, I had to investigate. The plant next to the one Pov is holding is a wild banana tree, but the smaller one she's working with is a baby coconut palm.
