๐ Slapping Ferns & Making Instant Tattoos ๐ฟ Steung Kach, Cambodia
Monkey-B was a little bored today, so she found a fern that makes temporary tattoos on your skin if you slap it with great force.
Fern-troduction ๐ฟ
ย ย ย I forgot to ask whether Monkey-B learned this from her mom, sister, at school, or perhaps even the neighbor girls, but either way, I knew it would be good Hive content. After a day cooking, curating ASEAN Hive posts, and digging irrigation trenches, it was almost 5pm. As usual, I had no photos for a post, so began the usual "How Do I Drum Up Hive Content In 30 Minutes Or Less" routine.
ย ย ย Like clockwork, I saw Monkey-B slapping herself in the corner of my eye, so I went to investigate on behalf of you readers. She was placing fern leaves on her arms and then giving herself a good whack, setting the design in her arm for about 30 minutes.
๐งด Sunblock?
ย ย ย There was a white chalky substance on the underside of the leaves, and it reminded me of the bark of the Aspen tree in the USA, which contains a similar substance, and was used by indigenous people as a natural sunblock.
ย ย ย I assume 70% of the imprint left in the arm is from the ninja slap, and I guess you could leave the imprint of just about anything on yourself with a good hit, anybody who's been punched by a ring-wielding fist knows that. However, the design sticks around for awhile, and that's got to be from the powdery stuff on the underside of the leaves.
It's A Fern Yo' ๐โโ๏ธ
ย ย ย Realizing this was going to be likely the only opportunity for Hive content today, I decided to take plenty of photos. Monkey-B makes a good model though, all she needs is a few seconds to come up with new poses and faces. Almost forgot to mention a mosquito delivered a perfect bite to the center of her forehead, and my little girl was a little self-conscious about photos so prominently displaying her mosquito bump. That's life though, it's a fern yo'!
Firing Up The Stove ๐ฅ
ย ย ย In a last minute effort to diversify my content, I snapped this picture of the missus firing up the woodstove to boil water for Puu Mab and Bong Tien. They prefer to drink extremely watered down tea at room temperature instead of water, very common in Cambodia. For years I used to drink weak room temperature tea too, can't explain why it's nice, but it is. Water that tastes like tea and smells like smoke is welcome in this household.
Some Corruption Is Good ๐โโ๏ธ
ย ย ย Monkey-B doesn't like to give massages or backwalks unless it comes with a podcast negotiation. I think it's a fair deal, in the end the result is a happy wife and a kid that's performed a little exercise, and not spent time on Tik-Tok or other useless apps/sites. I am happy my daughters spend their digital downtime on things like Hive and podcasts instead of Tik-Tok and following celebrities.

What an unique way to get tattoo
I can't believe I hadn't seen this before, but then again there aren't really many ferns to be found in Cambodia, especially in the rice fields that usually dominate the landscape.
Wait . I thought the poppodums prevented gang life, and here she is getting tattoos???
When I saw her trying to spell out MS-13 in leaves, I pulled the plug on fern tattooing.

Hi.. hi.. your little princess Monkey-B is so cute with her fern leaf tattoo and mosquito bite bumps, her style and pose is like that when she's taking pictures ha ha lol
Yes, that's right, Justin, when I was a child in 85-87, in the village where we lived, there were still many neighbors who cooked using firewood. After the food was cooked and served to us, of course it smelled of smoke. But, strangely enough, it's the smell of smoke that makes the food even more delicious on the tongue ๐คค๐คค
You know she's having fun and pleasantly distracted when she can't feel mosquitoes stealing her blood. I too like food that smells like smoke, especially if it's something roasted, but not a big fan of tea that smells and tastes like smoke.

There are some edible ferns here too, not sure which ones, but I know they aren't eaten as commonly as in Thailand or your country.

For now how are things there, I saw on Facebook Mrs. @sreypov there it was raining so hard that there was a lot of river water
We've lost some big chunks of land and our hammock huts are destroyed, very sad, but we have faired better than some of our neighbors.
Hopefully for now the weather is getting better.
Your daughters are so clever! I love all the little things they discover! ๐
I keep forgetting to ask her who/when/where she learned this Cambodian jailhouse skillset from....
For some reason, the slap tattoo has to reminds me of this clip at 1:22
