What Drives The Motivation To Hustle When Money Is Not There?

20230903_092451_0000.png

Some days ago, I saw a video of a man who was selling bottled water in heavy traffic. This wasn't a surprise. Selling bottled is an average hustle, a person who has experienced the hassle of living in Lagos Nigeria will understand that a traffic situation is a hub of heavy commercialization.

People take advantage of traffic disasters to sell products on state and national roads, and over time, this method of hustling has become an identity and an accepted method of work that's come to be accepted, irrespective of the potential danger that it holds. However, this isn't the main gist.

A person filmed a young man, uniquely advertising a bottled water brand. To be very honest, it wasn't like the man had first class marketing pitch, but the important thing is that, the people he sold to, found his methodology to be very appealing, which warranted another person to film the whole negotiating process, which made this guy an internet sensation.

The video became viral and trended. A lot of Nigerian influencers made a lot of money using the trended video. After analyzing the whole video, I discovered that this guy benefited from doing that little "extra" that you wouldn't really find when it comes to business.

In Nigeria, some people are known to have a terrible attitude to work.

Most times, their salaries or wages, determine how well they want to do their jobs.

The incentives they get from their client or bosses determine the kind of motivation they imbibe when working.

It's a contrasting issue, because most people who have the most comfortable jobs in Nigeria, tend to be the ones with the wrongest attitude to work while the ones struggling on the streets to make ends meet are the ones with the motivation to work.

I have seen people who have every right to be angry at their jobs: The profit they earn, the tax they pay, the efforts needed to face the excessive competition on the job.

Yet, they're the ones with the biggest motivation and the right attitude to work. I know that having no choice makes people placid, but sometimes, it's difficult to have the motivation to work from a situation of hope and despair, rather than from a place of advantage.

The guy in the video was mainly lauded because he saw the need to go for "extra" in a business that holds no guarantee or certainty.

Hustle Talent Is King

A lot of people would forget his imperfect marketing pitch because they see a true hustler, who chooses not to see inferiority in the hustle he does.

Some people find it difficult to be productive because they're demotivated by the job circumstances surrounding them. When money is not the motivation to work, it takes "extra" to see the best of people.

This isn't to say, anyone is immune. My point is that there are times when the money is small, this point is when people give up, rather than find creative ways to continue.

Brands Latches On To Social Popularity

To be very honest, I think the brand decided to give this guy a shot because he's already become an internet sensation (at least, for the time being) it's a way for them to latch on to that internet popularity and fame.

So they decided to use the advantage to put this guy's face out there, thereby solidifying the newfound popularity they've gained via this guy's video. It's a win-win situation.

This guy's gets to get some money. They might even choose to do a television ad, showcasing this guy as the focal theme of the ad copy. They already know they'll make millions from this appellation.

First, they accepted and acknowledged the guy for talking about their product, and this sentiment might just about propel their sales.

For someone who understands how marketing works, this is the modus operandi of how branding works. Sentiments sell products and not quality.

This guy will not be a long-term brand ambassador, they're riding on the waves of his current popularity to sell their product.
From what I gathered, this guy is now a signed ambassador to that brand of bottled water he tried to market.

Social Spaces Can Change People

Call it sentimental or trend employment, the most important thing is that his present financial condition will change. Whether this becomes permanent will mostly depend on him.

Call it riding on social waves, The guy is being rewarded for having an extra commendable attitude to hustling. There's nothing that beats relentless hustling, even talent is an endowment that dies without hustle.

When one has very little to gain or has nothing to gain or lose humility becomes evident in one's character. There is an element of humility in the guy's marketing.

This is very relatable to me being a gardener over a decade ago, the fact that I diligently performed my duty created the platform for into become the Telecommunication Technician that I am today.

It pays to put in the best of us whether the pay is small or big and even if it is unpaid engagement.

Of course, I believe that life naturally humbles us, especially when we're trying hard to survive. We see no essence in pride, rudeness or even arrogance.

Amazing, I haven't heard you narrate it before, but it seem you got into that field and actually took the time to master your craft, now you're a master of your craft and even when the money wasn't there, there was prospect that one day, it'll totally be different.

Well, I've been very inactive on social media, so I might have missed out on this media gist. Guess the second to the last paragraph here is interesting. But before I attend to that let me give a POV to the question.

What drives motivation if not money?

It will always be moneyThat's the reality of life only if we love to be insincere. This man is a superhero. We tend to be insincere sometimes, I know some people will say he's lucky, some will say God has favored him. Yes, it's true but do we see the side of intentionality, do we see commitment and focus,

Regarding taking advantage of the popularity and opportunity, to change the story of his life, guess he's capable, yeah though I don't know who he's and really don't know the degree of his responsibility but for a man to stay that consistent and focus at his age, you know what it means

You called him a man so I psychologically guess 50 and above.

Money is a motivation, true. But life's can be indifferent. Think of it like this: there are people who stick to their hustle when the money isn't coming, and there are others who cannot withstand the stress of of doing something that's not yielding any dividends.
When money overly motivates people, it takes away their patience, their ability to persevere. The bear market is a testament. So many people will never benefit from the bull market because they're not motivated to build in the bear market because the money is not there. Sometimes, when people jump from one venture or another because of money, they miss out on Opportunities because they're driven by money.

You called him a man so I psychologically guess 50 and above

He's a young man, should be from 29 to maybe 31.

hmm.....this is very true, but should we say is motivated by his situation cause most people humble themselves probably If there's no option or we say his vision keeps him going. If we're to look very closely such person can never be driven by vision No, cause the pressure of responsibilities will always point him to the direction of money

There must be a motivation

Just trying to exercise my thinking though

Great post @josediccus.
You see, people fail to understand what it takes to survive or stand out when it comes to marketing or money making.

Definitely, from the illustration you gave of the guy that sells water, there are other people around that site that sells same water brand but fails to apply the necessary means of standing out.

Strategies - change of plans - consistency - hardwork
I could basically appreciate this factor as the key to a surviving business.

That was the point, hundreds of people sells water on a daily, but he chose to do his stuffs rather differently. It paid off because he won't give or relent. In so many places in the world, hustling spirit is what takes people far, beyond what they can reckon.

I love this post so much.

This is what it means to survive in the business industry, branding and standing out, many people around could be doing the same thing with you, but what makes you unique?

Talent is important, but putting this talent to good use is another thing.

Thanks for sharing.

Standing out and putting that extra muscle. It's never easy to compete. Sometimes we come up against people who are better than we are. But that element of standing out goes a long way. I feel that in many cases hustle out-does talent.

Absolutely, it's incredible to see how a positive attitude and a little extra effort can go a long way in the world of hustling.
This guy's story is a testament to the fact that sometimes, it's not just about the product, but the passion and dedication you put into selling it that truly makes a difference.

Yes, sometimes dedication works even when the money-motivation isn't there. It's a case of trying to do better, adding extra flair on and off the camera irrespective of how easy or difficult it can actually be.

Getting to do the little jobs in a cheerful and committed manner can bring such, some call it luck but like you said, the brand is using him for a temporary win-win and though may not be long, he has gotten some achievements.

In the little we have, we should commit to it with dedication

Exactly, I feel it's a short term upliftment, but one thing is certain, he'll never go back to that conditioning that he was before that video got viral. I basically feel that he has done his bits and whatever win he accomplished from that fame will continue to go a long way for him

That particular video really got me thinking, how new waves can open up were we least expect it, And that's consistency in what we do regardless of what coming out,

Just few days ago I made a post about our obsession (positively in the aspect of our passion) which plunges us into being creative, that guy could have been doing that for how long, what shot him to limelight is the extra energy he puts into marketing the product, mind you he was doing it for fun and love for it not necessarily the money and I love his accent too he speaks very well

Some people find it difficult to be productive because they're demotivated by the job circumstances surrounding them. When money is not the motivation to work, it takes "extra" to see the best of people.

I also made a highlight about this in my post recently, I can tell you that one of the reason why the company launched out for him is the raw talent and energy in him, there are those so called HODs of marketing Department with degrees seating idle in an air conditioned office recieving good pay cheques with little or no productivity or creativness because they're in for the funds they get,

And here's these guy with probably no qualifications whatsoever doing this, imagine if these guy is trained by this company and given all the necessary tips to do more I can tell you he wouldn't mind to go back to the street and ensure that company sales so much and becomes the number one bottle water company in Nigeria

I once read in an article when Jim Iyke one of Nigeria's very popular actor opens up to how graduate with Degrees and qualifications ruin his business but that same business was revived by the street guys who has no qualification, and these should send a message to all Nigerians, it's not about complaining about the economy but how well are they willing to go to become Better at what they do....

Thanks for the comment. Of course the guy was doing the promo for the fun of it. I'm sure he must've been doing this for a very long time and this time luck shined on him. I use to tell people that sometimes it doesn't cost anything to do or put one's best into whatever they're doing. Provided they're initially doing that, being incentized by money alone will only make people lose out on Opportunities.

there are those so called HODs of marketing Department with degrees seating idle in an air conditioned office recieving good pay cheques with little or no productivity or creativness because they're in for the funds they get,

In Nigeria, people with the most sophisticated degrees and fancy educational background are the laziest and less innovative lots. Some of them are thriving from the innovations and hardwork of their subordinates. The street is where the real innovations are, and just like Jim Iyke pointed out in that interview. I saw that interview and I was like, only an experienced person can relate with what Jim actually said in that interview.

At the end of the day, I just feel people need to put in extra effort even if there wasn't immediate profit, provide there's prospect and the future looks promising.

On a personal note and having worked corporate for more than a decade. One thing I have learned is to value time. Sure income is relative to ones skills, but now what i actually realized is that more than your contributions to a company it is the time you committed which gets actually paid for.

There must be something that differentiate two people in the same business; that is uniqueness. Most people who are hustling now aren't doing it for the money alone but something else which makes it extra ordinary from normal thing. Another thing here is being intentional. Like in the case of the guy, he has overlooked the aspect of the money alone but gone far beyond just normal marketing because of his intentions to be successful in what he is doing.

There is always a reward for going a little extra in our career or businesses. The extra sometimes involves more creativity and doing what others are not doing.

I saw the video and I heard how he explained the importance of the water to the body. He even said it help to take care of spinal cord. This is not what we hear everyday from bottle water sellers.

Hahaha you saw the video Indeed. I don't know if what is important to the spinal cord or not, but the guy wanted to just sell his wares. That extra bit of resiliency and the idea of doing something totally different.

It's a contrasting issue, because most people who have the most comfortable jobs in Nigeria, tend to be the ones with the wrongest attitude to work while the ones struggling on the streets to make ends meet are the ones with the motivation to work.

This is so true, the ones with seemingly comfortable jobs tend to do their jobs with so much laxity, this is very common in the government sector, while those out on the street are the ones giving their best shots at whatever they are doing.
For the guy in the video, surely he would not be going back to the traffic, except he doestnt maximize this opportunity.

0

avatar

Definitely. I've seen the ones in the public sector and how they tend to become lazy overtime. I feel that this has to do with the complacency of the Nigerian government in general. Having the money and a good pay should motivate people to work harder, but it's a contrasting issue in Nigeria. When people feel that their job is safe irrespective of their attitude to work, this makes them misuse the opportunities they have.

Hmmmm. Very true. The Strategy of standing out

It's hard and I think there is an opportunity for anyone. I think selling water can earn money but I don't think it would work out that well in the US, but it could in Nigeria. I don't think the corporate structure is for everyone either. There are plenty of ways to earn and hustling is a valid way to do so.

Unemployment is an issue in Lagos Nigeria. It's not like there's a lot t profit with selling packaged water, but people would rather do this instead staying broke or being unemployed. There are not a lot of opportunities out there, so people want to do anything they can to survive including selling water.

I would like to say here that people who become rich do the same thing, they have no sense of humanity at all and they even bother him in the same way. I have to work these things. If he doesn't do that, he won't have money to eat bread at night, so he is forced to put up with the rudeness of all these people.
