Riverside Leisure: Exploring Bach Dang Wharf Park in Saigon

Hello friends!

Nearly a week deep into adventures around Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon for short-termers like me still), checking out hyped attractions and quintessential tourist scenes inevitably loses luster. Thus when a local expat pal suggested a lesser-discussed riverside park overlooking the churning Saigon river, the concept sounded ideal for a relaxed ramble without map or must-see list - just intuitive wandering and breathing space. Soon enough, I uncovered the joy of people watching scenes unfold along the cool waterfront promenade.

Located just across the soaring Ba Son suspension bridge in downtown District 1 along Ton Duc Thang Street, Bach Dang Park didn't flaunt flashy landmarks or selfie-bait (however, it would make a great backdrop) or sculptures that draw weekend crowds. In fact, entering across the busy street onto the tree-lined path hugging the riverbank, few others shared this oasis at all - just joggers and elders on carved benches. Claiming a shady patch of grass near warbling songbirds, I found that I could digest the panorama at leisure rather than snap obligatory photos (But, I did take a bunch of photos HAHAHAHA).

At the northernmost point of the park, the path ended, and the bridge over the Saigon River started. It was quite a sight to see the full moon rising over the city and river from on top of the bride. After this, I headed back to the hotel and rested a bit, but wow, it was such a great day.
