Child trafficking is one of the menace facing Nigeria and most low income countries across the world. Both the Nigerian government and the international community frowns at trafficking in persons.

In recent weeks a baby factory was invaded by the law enforcement agencies and several young pregnant ladies were rescued. Although their rescue wasn't in their favour because most of them use such means to settle their various economic needs.

Most of the people that are into child trafficking and trafficking in persons in Nigeria and other low income countries across the world usually based their argument on bad economy. Whether, the economy is bad or not child trafficking on its own is wrong in all it's entirety.

Just a day ago, a mother sold her child in order to repay bank loan. This shows the extent to which people are going through hardship in Nigeria.

A mother in Ogun State has been arrested for allegedly selling her 18-month-old baby for N600,000 to pay off a loan she obtained from a microfinance bank.

Spokesman of the Ogun State Police Command Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Monday, April 17, revealed that the buyer, who is yet to be identified, purchased the baby in Lagos.

The suspect, identified as Olaide Adekunle, was apprehended following a report at the Sango Divisional Police headquarters by her husband, Nureni Rasaq.

According to Rasaq, his wife left their home for Lagos in March with their baby girl, Moridiat Rasaq, but returned without the child.

When asked the reason for her action, she stated that she borrowed money from a microfinance bank, and when she was unable to pay back the money, the bank agents started dragging her and threatening to deal decisively with her. It was consequence upon this that she ran to Lagos and started hawking sachet water.

During interrogation the suspect confessed to have sold her baby for N600k in order to settle a bank loan she got some months that's gradually increasing on a daily basis. Although the buyer is yet to be apprehended but efforts are being made to arrest the buyer.

Meanwhile the acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Babakura Muhammed, has directed that the suspect be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and possible recovery of the baby.

From what I've read here, this event took place in Nigeria, right? Well, it's unfortunate, horrific and shouldn't happen, but it's not even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to child trafficking, or child exploitation (in all possible areas). This issue, that of child exploitation, we should take it up extremely hard and dedicate ourselves to publicising it in order to denounce it. Both in this community (DeepDives) and in others. It is really alarming what happens to the most defenceless population of all; children.

The incident happened in Lagos, Nigeria. Just how the child will feel when in the future his foster parent or someone who knows about the trafficking reveals the story of his birth and purchase to him. This will amount to depression and probably suicide. It's so unfortunate. Thanks for stopping by my post, I appreciate
