Foi aqui que tudo começou para o Brasil, foi a primeira área do território nacional a ser colonizada, mesmo sendo a terceira maior região do país, estamos em primeiro lugar em número de estados. São eles: Alagoas (AL), Bahia (BA), Ceará (CE), Maranhão (MA), Pernambuco (PE), Paraíba (PB), Piauí (PI), Rio Grande do Norte (RN) e Sergipe (SE).

Uma característica do Nordeste é o clima semiárido, situação que causa desgaste e dificuldade na vida dos moradores da região. O clima contribui para a seca dos rios e a escassez de água resultante da ausência de chuvas por períodos que podem durar mais de 6 meses. Existem quatro estações do ano, mas os nordestinos costumam dizer que são apenas duas: inverno e verão. A maior parte da extensão territorial apresenta temperaturas anuais superiores a 25ºC e níveis de precipitação relativamente baixos.

O relevo é formado por planaltos, planícies, montanhas, chapadas e formações rochosas presentes em todos os estados nordestinos. Alagoas, Paraíba, Pernambuco e Rio Grande do Norte possuem o famoso Planalto da Borborema, formação geológica que favorece o aquecimento e a seca em grande parte da região, impedindo que a umidade oceânica chegue ao interior do Nordeste.

Existem três grandes bacias hidrográficas: Parnaíba, São Francisco e Tocatins-Araguaia. A bacia hidrográfica do Parnaíba é um rico reservatório de água subterrânea que passa pelos estados do Ceará, Maranhão e Piauí, é fonte de sobrevivência para as pessoas que sofrem com a seca na região, poços artesianos garantem a manutenção da vida nesta área.

A Bacia do São Francisco, considerada a mais importante por ser um rio perene, está presente nos estados de Alagoas, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco e Sergipe. Seu nome é sinônimo de vida por onde passa, é relevante para a produção de energia devido às diversas hidrelétricas instaladas ao longo de seu percurso e minimiza a estiagem nas áreas por onde passa. A bacia Tocatins-Araguaia é a maior do território brasileiro, ultrapassa a região Nordeste, e vem sofrendo constante degradação ambiental, mais um problema ambiental presente no território brasileiro.

A vegetação é diversificada, resultante da variedade de relevos presentes na região, temos: a Mata Atlântica, área florestal localizada no litoral nordestino, já sofreu muito desmatamento, existe uma pequena porção deste território; O Cerrado, vegetação com climas tropicais; A Caatinga, região com plantas acostumadas à baixa umidade, plantas xerófitas; Mata dos Cocais, caracterizada pela presença de palmeiras como babaçu e carnaúba; e, por fim, temos os Manguezais, vegetação próxima ou em contato com a água do mar, plantas que resistem à salinidade do ambiente.

The Parnaíba hydrographic basin is a rich reservoir of underground water that passes through the states of Ceará, Maranhão and Piauí, it is a source of survival for people who suffer from the drought in the region, artesian wells guarantee the maintenance of life in this area.

The São Francisco Basin, considered the most important because it is a perennial river, is present in the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco and Sergipe. Its name is synonymous with life wherever it goes, it is relevant to energy production due to the various hydroelectric plants installed along its route, and it minimizes drought in the areas it passes through. The Tocatins-Araguaia basin is the largest in Brazilian territory, goes beyond the Northeast region, and has been suffering constant environmental degradation, yet another environmental problem present in Brazilian territory.

The vegetation is diverse, resulting from the variety of reliefs present in the region, we have: the Atlantic Forest, a forest area located on the northeastern coast, has already suffered a lot of deforestation, there is a small portion of this territory; The Cerrado, vegetation with tropic climates; The Caatinga, a region with plants accustomed to low humidity, xerophytic plants; Mata dos Cocais, characterized by the presence of palm trees such as babaçu and carnaúba; and, finally, we have Mangroves, vegetation that is close to or in contact with sea water, plants that withstand the salinity of the environment.
