Rust 📽 Through the Lens

📢 I HAVE THE PERFECT BASE! IT IS UNRAIDABLE! 📢

Hold these rockets, bro. 🚀

Today we are talking about one of the most popular survival, base-building games out there. One of the first to do it, and one of the best. A successful Early Aceess story (which is an achievement by itself) and an even more successful post-launch journey. This game is huge and it's high time we cover it here.

Therefore❗️ In this edition of Through the Lens 🎞, we'll be taking a look at ** Facepunch Studios'** first-person, survival, base building FPS from 2013: Rust. ◀️

(I'll be honest, the name of this game always thew me off for some reason, I am so glad I finally got around to seeing how great it actually is)

Roll it! 📽

🔷 UP TOP 🔶

The OST here is your standard survival fare. The tones are sweet and inviting. Inspirational, even. Until you get your head blown out its neck. But hey, there are songs to compensate for that scenario as well. So all in all, a very good fit for the game, and a soundtrack you could listen to in the background. 👏

Composed by the amazing Alex Rehberg

I hated Rust when it first came out. It looked like one of those asset-flip titles that were very prevalent at the time of its release. Not to mention it was in Early Acess. Which at the time just meant 'we're gonna steal your money'. So it took a long time for me to take the game seriously, let alone respect and love it.

Now, I love keeping track of the wacky things possible in this game. I suck at it and can't play it seriously, but I love it all the same. Let me try and elaborate on why, so maybe you can be more willing than I was initially. 😇

🔷 MMO 🔶

Nowhere in the description of this game does it say it's an MMO. And yet it has all the trapp9ings of one. Rust is played on 500-1000 population servers, which gives off the feel of playing a mass multiplayer online game. 💯

All the mechanics mesh in a way that is very free-flowing. From the calm markets to the wild and untamed PVP wilderness. This game has all the trappings of a great MMO. It just really isn't one. And that's for the better in my opinion. MMOs have become such time sinks, that I cannot see myself playing one ever again. Whereas Rust has all the positives of playing an MMO, but none of the grindy bad points I personally hate.

One of the quirks I love about Rust its the proximity voice chat. You can for instance sneak around and overhear an enemy clan planning to take your base. The immersive aspect is something, that not many games pull off. Yes, you do get the occasional toxic 12-year-old, but that's the price we have to pay!

The game can be played solo (although, if you are under 1k hours played that's asking for a bad time) or with however many people you wish. Usually, there are self-made clans that have their own designated roles, but there is nothing in-game that perpetuates this. The design just lends itself super well to the sandbox aspects. 🙂 Speaking of which....

🔷 SANDBOX 🔶

It's a travesty I waited so long to say this but this game is super difficult. I'm talking about one of the most frustrating and downright merciless multiplayer games you will ever experience. Good luck playing the Vanilla servers right away. Honestly? You won't be able to even see a gun, let alone shoot one.

Wanna know something else? By the time you get to shoot one, you will be awful at it. Since the shooting in this game is skill-based, through and through. This is one of my favorite aspects of the game, even though it makes the barrier for entry super steep and unforgiving. 😬

Once you get done with all that you have to build your base. And the base building is your standard survival game fair. The twist here is that you can raid other player's bases, as they can yours. You have to build your base in such a way that is both practical and well-defended. An aspect I personally adore. ❤️

To build said base you will need lots and lots of materials that you have to find from farming in the world. Right before your head gets blasted by an AK; your farm gets stolen, and you are left with nothing again. Like I said - brutal. But if you do manage to build your base, be careful, and farm, craft, and even make friends. Then this game allows for an experience few others can boast of.

🔷 LEGACY 🔶

This game has already built a strong legacy. A lot of people consider it as the best in its genre and I can see why. It is an amazing game that only gets better with each patch. When you have dedicated devs like these, that fcfare about their game as much as their fans, then you get something truly special.

I am bold enough to say that Rust is the best in the biz at what it does. Above all the other survival, base building games. And there are quite a lot of those so go figure. It is the best in its class, and I can't wait to see what other wacky inventions the devs add in the future.

And if this glowing article wasn't enough, yes, you should try Rust out. But only if you have a squad of friends that are willing to duke it out with you. Starting off as a solo is just a recipe for disaster. 😅

Damn this game has changed a lot since I played it back in 2015. 500-1000 people sounds wild. The map must really have grown huge to accommodate that. 40-50 people was a sweet spot back then.

Yup. I honestly couldn't think twice about this game back in the day. It has truly become a staple in its genre.
