The Impact of Smartphone Addiction on Family Dynamics

There is time for everything

I'm sure the quote above is a popular saying across different countries, but these days, we seem to lose track of when to drop our phones, we have become so addicted that losing sight of our phones for a few seconds could cause a panic attack to some of us. The invention of our smartphones has no doubt brought us great benefits, from transacting online to earn an income from the comfort of our homes to making new friends all over the world, even schooling/studying has been made easy, all through the use of our phones and so many other benefits.

But sadly, in a bid to catch up on all the happenings online, we've truncated our family bonds, it's no surprise days to see parents focused on their phones to the detriment of their children's attention, even husbands and wives severe their bonds and become strangers in the own home because the time they were supposed to spend communicating, creating wonderful memories and building the family's bond is spent on being more focused on their phones. So my answer about banning phones during family moments is a big yes.

If this is implemented, it will be easier for families to pay close attention to one another, know when any of them are feeling down, and give optimum support to liven their mood, which is our duty as a family. There was a time I wanted to talk to my husband about something serious bothering me, but he was fixed on his phone while I was trying to bear my mind, hoping to find a possible solution to the serious matter that disturbed my peace, I couldn't say what I Intended saying because I felt he wasn't listening so I stayed mute, and he was like, I'm listening, but for me, it doesn't look like it, because I needed his full focus and attention when discussing with someone, we don't just want you to listen, we want to be able to read your reaction, facial and body language as well, not just the reply, and paying attention to your phone during that moment makes one feel insulted and less important to you, and I'm sure no one wants their family to feel such way about them, so if you drop your phone during a job interview or meeting why not with family?

Do not even carry the phone during family moments, you could put it on silent, whatever you are so focused on your phone can wait for those few minutes, that's why we have notifications to inform us of what we missed, think about this, would you rather lose your family's love and attention than lose your phone that can be replaced, your family can't be replaced, so learn to be conscious of your phone habits around them, for parents, lay a good example to your kids, give them that full attention, and not holding unto your phone guarantees that attention and for young adults respect your spouse, or parent and siblings, wherever you fit in, don't let those special moments spent with them be lost or tarnished.

I already became aware of this phone addiction and took caution to not allow it affect my family bonding moment, I never liked when my husband took his phone seriously when I needed his attention so I made sure to talk this out with him, and so, there's been a little adjustment not as I would want it, but at least there is improvement and when it involves our children, we don't joke with giving our full attention, so I've already started implementing the no phone rules in my home during important family moment because I know how vital it is to sustain the family bond.

Good to see you discussing one of my favourite topics.
If we drop the phone off before an interview or a meeting then why we do not drop the phone in family time?
A very helpful post dear.

It very sad that technology is rapidly having more effects than good on our lives, some families don't even connect anymore because of phone. We really need to rethink and trace back to share good times and connection with love ones

Our phones can really be a big distraction in our relationships with our loved ones. Being ignorant of this can cause great harm to you and your loved ones.

You are so right about that, reason we have to be very conscious of our phone habit.

You are right dr, if we off our phones during interview and meetings, why can't we reciprocate same during family time? Moreover family time is not going to take forever just few hours and every one is back to their businesses.
