I Feel Incomplete Without My HIVE Power!

avatar

As you might've read, or not, I am without most of my HIVE Power for the next 5... almost 4 days.

The reason: I delegated HP instead of updating my delegation. My fault, but way to go Hive for a great UX (most likely limited by the available APIs)! And I'm not saying this for myself, I can cope with it despite being annoyed by the situation...

In fact, I checked to see how Ecency handles HP delegation too. You can see they try to make it more user-friendly, but in the end, they seem to be limited by the same legacy APIs that make things so unnatural. So... we know where the ball is now, for the most part...

Ok, maybe it's not the right time to speak about all this, with all the anxiety caused by the price evolution, so I'll stop here. Unfortunately, it hardly ever seems the right time.

But I do want to talk about the before and after. Someone needs to experience it to feel it.

People may not realize how important their HIVE Power is until they don't have it anymore, even temporarily.

Before I lost access to the majority of my stake for 5 days, I voted on comments with a 5-10% weight, in general. Now, to push a comment over the dust threshold, I'd have to vote it with almost a 50% weight. I'm not going to do that. I guess my commenters would have to suffer through this period with me... or not. It's up to them.

Then, manual curation on other posts also suffers throughout this period because I don't have control to my full stake. I could choose only a handful of posts every day and upvote them at 100%, but I don't like that. I have a system that worked for me and I won't change it for 4 remaining days, even if that means much smaller upvotes from me during this period.

There were some opinions (to which I agreed) that we should change the name of HIVE Power to Staked HIVE, to match the terminology used throughout the crypto world. I reconsider my position on this... I said in the title I felt incomplete without my HP. That's the wrong word! What I should've used is impotent (as in powerless). Thus HIVE Power makes more sense than Staked HIVE given all the use cases of HP, particularly its power to influence how inflation is distributed through curation and, to a much smaller degree for non-whales, governance.

Just curious... from what interface do you make HP delegations? How often do you delegate, to yourself or to others?

I think the idea of staked Hive is good, as Hive power might not align further and seem user friendly. Don't worry, I guess it's a matter of a few days. I do agree that we need to revisit a lot of things and change them to what's relatable and user-friendly.

I don't know. For a normalization of terminology with other crypto projects, it makes sense. To give HP the extra touch that comes from the social aspect, maybe HP makes more sense. But it's debatable. Sometimes it's good to have your own terminology that distinguishes you from others, as long as it doesn't mean a serious effort of explaining and understanding the concepts specific to the ecosystem.

I experienced exactly the same thing when I had some serious problems and decided to power down. Now my HP is seriously depleted and I struggle to make comments or posts. But maybe I will buy more hive now that the price is low. Thanks for the info. Have a nice day.

Yep, that's a good price... I'm slowly buying more as well. I am more fortunate, I think. I will have back full control of my stake in only a few days.

Very unfortunate incident brother, sad to lose control over your HIVE Power like that. I agree, just like I said yesterday to you, the user experience with delegations could be smoother than this. These technical details impact our daily interactions so they really have to do something about it

Yeah, luckily it's only a couple of days, but it can be frustrating when it happens.

I can relate to an extent. That feeling of voting and the author getting little or nothing can be sad sometimes. The best gift my delegator gave to me was delegating some of his Hive power to me and I try to use it to help people. I love it when I vote on a user with 0.00 and they get 0.06 or 0.05. I know what it feels like to make people happy by just clicking on the love icon that’s why I try to use my Hive power very well and I don’t think of powering down.

Curation rewards are great but you see voting and putting a smile on people's faces? Is everything!

Indeed. For people at the beginning of the road, any upvote that pushes them above the dust threshold is significant. And to see that 0.00 change to something higher is a big confidence booster to some people.

PS: The power of habit... I upvoted your comment by habit, but it's kind of pointless if it is below 0.02.

I understand that feeling having delegated out a lot of my power recently, so I rented to make up to an extent. But losing almost all of it for five days really sucks!
!LOL

Yeah, it's better than last time I messed this up. Then, I didn't have any HP in my posting account. Now I have almost a dolphin-worth of HP here too.

Do you know why it takes 5 days to get your HP back, is it for security measures?

I've not tinkered with HP delegations because I don't have much HP yet to delegate. Aiming to have my 100% vote way above the dust threshold before consider delegating.

It's to avoid multiple voting with the same stake. Vote with one account, delegate to another account and vote with that, withdraw and delegate to another to vote with a 3rd and so on. Initially it was a 7 days cooloff period the same as the voting window, but someone remarked that it's enough to have a 5-day cooloff to prevent the abuse and that change was made. I don't remember exactly the explanation why it was shortened.

I've not tinkered with HP delegations because I don't have much HP yet to delegate.

In my case, I mostly delegate to myself. I have a separate staking account, different than my posting account where I keep most of my HP. Kind of inconvenient, but I don't use it in various places, like my posting account.

Aiming to have my 100% vote way above the dust threshold before consider delegating.

That's smart! Vote power has a social effect too, we like it or not. If someone delegates most of its HP away, even if it's a lot, their vote would be insignificant and would lose that effect, if they were ever interested in it.

Right. It makes sense, having multiple accounts and delegating across them within a few hours to cast votes on the same thing(or different things) skews the data too.

I've thought of doing something similar, one account specifically for posting, and other social activities of Hive and another account for investments or gaming. Might implement it in the future if everything goes according to plan.

Yes, HP matters, it's a signal on being a player with some influence on the ecosystem :)

I have that too. Usually I don't play games from my posting account. But I do invest from it (if they are not gaming-related), since some investments are "drip" style (dripping small amounts of tokens regularly), and considering we also receive tribe tokens for posting or curating, it's better to have them in one place.

But I do have other accounts for other reasons. For example, I needed a separate account where to add my HBD in savings for my 52-week challenge. So, I use another account for that. In the past, I used a separate account for Actifit.

Or if you have investments with different horizons of time or purposes. You can't have them in the same account (the same assets or products).

It sucks to hear and I agree that HP is very important. As for the votes, I wouldn't worry too much. It's temporary and I haven't delegated out any HP. Until I get my goal of a 5% upvote that passes the dust threshold, I don't see my self doing that.

That's a good goal to have! Although the threshold might vary with the price of HIVE. At least I think it does because I doubt the threshold is in dollar amount.

It will however be a long journey if you won't buy the stake, and occasionally a small delegation might be beneficial.
