Ponte Vecchio, Florence

(Edited)

This is my entry for @olgavita's Reflection Hunters Contest round 78; Ponte Vecchio; the famous bridge in Florence, Italy.

1.jpg

It was originally a wooden bridge over the river Arno dates from the middle ages. When this bridge was destroyed by a flood they rebuilt it in 1345 in brick.
The name means "Old Bridge".

There are many shops on the bridge, but all goldsmiths and jewelers.
"To enhance the prestige and clean up the bridge, a decree was made in 1595 that excluded butchers from this bridge (only goldsmiths and jewelers are allowed) that is in effect to this day." (source Wikipedia).

Here is a view of one of the windows of the shops with another reflection; one of a tourist 😂

This last shot was taken from a viewpoint on a hill just outside the old city center. You can clearly see the shops being attached to the bridge.

That is a really gorgeous photograph!
I have a strange question though, I was watching James May: Our Man in Italy, and I swear that is that same bridge he attempted to draw in one of the episodes. I could be wrong though, but it looks extremely familiar 😂

Ha! Yay! My memory isn't completely useless! Then again, it is quite a distinct bridge and I somehow didn't think there would be many like it. I think it stuck in my memory specifically because they were drawing it, and because I doodle as well, I immediately started picturing how I would sketch it. Mr May actually didn't do a bad job on his sketch.

interesting to see shops on the bridge - it has building continuity between sides
looks like place worth visiting
and it has beautiful reflection
nice photos

p.s.
first I misread that it is built with 1345 bricks 😊

Thabks. It's indeed a city worth visiting.

I indeed think there are a bit more than 1345 brick in it 🤣
