Hivegarden update: A complete wilderness!

As you could see by the title of this blog; my garden was quite a wilderness.
We have been on holiday abroad for the past three weeks and the plants have been growing quite well when we were away.

During our three week absence our neighbors looked after our garden. At least; I asked them if they could water our garden if it didn't rain for a couple of days in a row. And that just happened in the first week. It was sunny, warm and dry.
In the weeks after that it was more volatile. There were days with both sun and rain.

When we got back from our holiday last friday I was shocked by what I saw. The complete kitchen garden was overgrown. The mulch that I had applied earlier did a really good job since there weren't a lot of weeds. It was all that I had planted that has grown.
I really had to do some pruning to do...
image.png

The three tomato plants have grown to over a meter and are carrying dozens of tomatoes. They are still small and green, but they still have the time to grow.
image.png

The sweet peppers are also a lot bigger then before we left. I haven't spotted any peppers yet. Hopefully they will start growing soon.
image.png

I had already read that zuccini plants grow fast en can get very large and that it's advisable to remove some of the big leaves to give the flowers some space (so the bees can reach them easier) and the plant can give more of it's energy to the fruits.

image.png

When we left there were no beans at all, so these have grown in just three weeks. I think we can have our first harvest. That will be the first vegetables from our own garden.
image.png

When I moved some of the big leaves of one of the zucchini plants I spotted quite a large zucchini.
image.png

It was actually bigger than the ones you can buy in the supermarket here.
image.png

Another plant that had a growth spurt is the cucumber. Three weeks ago the cucumbers were just two centimeters, but now there were a couple of them that were over 20 centimeters.
image.png

I cut the largest from the plant to have a taste. It looks a bit different than the ones in the supermarket, but I had already seen that in some Youtube video's I watched. The taste wouldn't be different I was told.
image.png

And they were right. It tastes just like a regular cucumber.
image.png

After pruning the zucchini plants there was quite a bit more space in the garden. I noticed a lot of the mulch has disappeared, so I need to apply a new layer soon.

image.png

I told my neighbors that they should pick some raspberries when they were in my garden, but they told me they couldn't find any. Which is quite strange since we were picking a handful every day.
But when we got back I noticed that there were a lot of raspberries, but they aren't ripe yet. It looks like they have been waiting for us to return 😀

image.png

The blueberries are slowly turning from green into blue. But they still need some time before we can pick them.
image.png

Our apple tree is doing well. Some of the apples have really grown quite a bit. But other still remained quite small. I do wonder why some apples grow quicker than others.
I also spotted one with some scratches on it. I thing this is done by birds, so I will cover it with a net tomorrow.

image.png

I started with this kitchen garden last year. The first experiment were no success. This mostly had to do with the fact that I started after the summer.
This year I started seeding inside and planted the seedlings outside when theyvwere big enough. It is so cool to see that everythingbhas grown so nicely and that we can even harvest some crops.
I didn't know I would like this gardening thing so much.

They surely do. Same for the string beans we had today!
Don't you have a garden anymore?
I've just freed up a relatively small spot in my garden for growing vegetables. I would like to expand, but then I have to give up the terrace 😀

Well, your garden certainly looks like it is doing very well! I remember seeing your pictures from much earlier, and now you have quite a "jungle" there.

I think our part of the world (northwest USA) must be pretty similar climate to yours; our garden is in much the same stage.

=^..^=

It could be that you are on the same 'height'. At least the same season.

It's cool to see these seeds turn into large plants in jst a couple of months.

So lucky no weeds grow Wilder than your plants. In my garden (I still not taking care all), weeds grow wilder than my plants. Big rainy makes weeds happy here😅

Your plants has yummy crops later! That's cucumber has a bit sweet taste, right? I thought it is Japanese cucumber 😊

I applied a layer of mulch on top of the soil. I think this helped a lot to prevent weeds from growing. The soil doesn't get a lot of sun because of the mulch.

I don't know how to describe the taste of cucumbers. It is a lot of water 😀
I also don't know what exact species it is, so it could be a Japanese indeed.

The weeds are respectful and the raspberries are in love with you and same time stingy.

Your garden is cool. Hopefully, you'll plant again next year?

Thanks! You're right. The cucumbers look a bit strange compared to the ones in the supermarket, but they taste great.
I harvested and eaten some of the string beans too. I really start to like this gardening thing 😀

Your garden looks great. Must have been nice to return home and see all the progress. The veggies look great. That’s a big courgette.
My city garden also made some strides. I also have courgettes and cucumbers but smaller. A few tomatoes ripened but broke from all the rain. I love the rain does not seem to stop.

Funny that you have smaller courgettes and cucumbers, but you do have ripe tomatoes.
That probably has to do with the amount of sun. Or did you plant the tomatoes earlier?

I have bound my tomatoes on a stick to prevent them from breaking.
Those city gardens keep us busy :)

The tomatoes were sown on 28 March and the courgettes and cucumbers on 11 June. I bought everything from Makkelijke Moestuin (MM). I do not have a plot but a a table garden and grow bags from MM. I am a big fan. I have an app and great guidance for my small garden but big balcony/terrace - it about 8X2.5 metres.
What I meant by broken is that the tomatoes absorbed too much water - so they look broken. I will attached a photo.

Having come back from my property with is really overgrown forest your pictures look tame.

I wish I had your problem of overgrown veggies... you are right though.. serious pruning required.

The fruits and veggies look awesome. Good job and enjoy!
