Cycling in bella Italia

Today is our last day of our two weeks stay in Italy. Tomorrow we will be driving to France to spend another week in the Jura region.
Since we didn't have a lot planned for today except packing the car I decided to make a third and final round in the area.

San Felice del Benaco

We've spent the past two weeks in a mobile home on a camping in San Felice del Benaco at the coast of lake Garda. It really is a beautiful region. Very green and the lake is surrounded by some beautiful hills.

It had been raining quite severe last night with lightning and hail, but this morning the sky had cleared up. Most roads were already dried up.

One of the things I was surprised about was the large number of cycling paths in between the different villages. They are a welcome alternative for the main roads where you can have a lot of traffic.

I cycled a quite some time along a river. On the way I came across some lovely Italian villages. I can't recall the name of this village, butI just love the scenic view of the brige with the castle in the background.

I also noticed that almost every town has his own church. No matter how small the town is. I've also spotted a lot of these little chappels. Some of them have catholic saints, but this one was devoted to holy Mary.

I had added quite some climbs in the route. Most of the roads have hairpins like the one above. It were some tough climbs with percentages going upto 15% sometimes, but the average was about 6% which is doable for a trained cyclist.

During the climb I had a perfec view over the valley. Here you can see how green the area actually is. And this is not strange since it rains here quite often and when it rains it rains hard I've experienced.

On the way back I really had to hurry a bit since there were some threatening skies. And they happened to be just in the direction I was heading.
Fortunately I made it back to the campsite just in time before it started raining again.

It was again a very nice ride. I'm satisfied with the 65 kilometers and almost 1000 meters of elevation in the three hour ride.
I really enjoyed my rides here. The roads are mostly good and they even have some cycling paths. But the people here are also used to cyclists on the main roads here, so they give you enough space.

Unfortunately we have to leave tomorrow, but we still have another week of holiday in France ahead.

I hope you enjoyed my ride.

I never thought Italy would be so beautiful. I heard that it is beautiful however this exceeds my expectations from the photos that you have shared.

It's a bit far from home for you 😀
But it's really nice indeed.

Are you on Discord or do you use the peakd chat by the way?
I'd like to ask you a question about your strava2hive posts.

I admire you and all the cyclists I see in Italy. The inclines and narrow roads are challenging. The area where you cycled is beautiful and green indeed. Good that you made it back just in time. The downpours are impressive. Have a great time in France.

Thanks for visiting my blog. The inclines can be tough, but experiences cyclists can manage them. Cycling in such a green environment is very nice. It's different then cycling through the dunes and polders at home 😀
Are you still in Italy? We have arrived in France already for our last week of the holiday. If the weather allows it I'll do another cycling trip here too.

Yes I can imagine that it is a different feeling than being in NL. This year was a shorter than normal trip. I returned home late last night. My teenagers have their own holiday plans. 😄 I usually combine it with France as well. Have a great time. I hope you it is not too hot there.

I'm happy hour teenagers are still too young to go by themselves (12 and 14), but that time will come. At least they do still want to go with you too.
This is our last week here in France. The temparatures are going down here this week. I don't mind that as long as it doesn't rain all the time.

Oh great that it is cooling off as the temperatures there can be treacherous.
Yes we are lucky that our teenagers still want to travel with us even when they have other plans with friends. It does shorten our time together but I am happy that they were with us.
