SOME TRADITIONS DURING HOLIDAY

The holiday for this year seems to be very different from the previous ones. Special thanks to the management of this community for taking their time to really deal with the matter of holiday even in this precious time. I have been enjoying every moment of the holiday because each task for the day, I ensure that is properly managed which gives me fulfilment. The subject for this edition focuses on the holiday tradition that is misunderstood. Before I proceed I would like to explain what tradition means.

Tradition to me is the believe system, customs or way of doing something for a particular period of time. It could also be culture that's the way of life. Tradition differs in places and depending on the environment. I will in this contest attempt to share some tradition being practice during holidays like this that is misunderstood. Many people don't know the reason why they do certain things. They just found themselves in it especially in the African region due to our passion for celebration. As I always say, there is no month of the year that records highest dimension of celebration like the month of December.

One of the things misunderstood tradition at holiday especially Christmas season is that many people take it as time for putting new clothes. From the environment where I come, it will take the grace of God to correct this notion that Christmas is not just for sewing new clothes. It will interest you to note that when I was much younger, if our parents failed to buy or sew a new clothes hmmm we won't eat, neither would we go for any Sunday service. We grew up to see people wearing new garment during Christmas without knowing the reason behind it. It has become a tradition in my place right. Do you know that somebody will like to go on hunger strive than not to wear a new clothe.

Another tradition that is misunderstood during Christmas holiday like this, is the rate at which people eat. People eat uncontrollably which at the end lands them in big trouble. Just two days ago a lady was sharing how she ate different kind of food, chops etc. At night, she couldn't sleep because stomach was turning her making her to purge unnecessarily. I kept wondering whether other days and months people don't to satisfaction? Why must one eat to such extend? Christmas holiday is not about eating and drinking but to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Even Jesus the chief celebrant I doubt whether he eats like this.

Holiday traditions has been misunderstood and turned to a mere time of strolling to hang up with friends. We have heard and seen different reports on how many youths died in the name of celebrating Christmas while others became pregnant. There was a year some sets of youth went to the river bank to have party. Hmmm I was like would the celebrant even like what we are doing? These were drunk and started misbehaving suddenly some were drown in the river. It took time to discover their corpse. The real essence for celebration shouldn't be this way. I thought that's a scapegoat for them but they remained adamant till date. That's how many are cutting their destiny short.
