Blockchain and Ghana

The internet is ever evolving, and one of the most significant aspects of that evolution recently is Blockchain Technology. It’s application in the real world are countless and, in this post, I’m specifically going to discuss how my country Ghana can leverage Blockchain technology to transform how elections are held, our educational and health sector.

Blockchain and Transparency

I can’t count how many times there’s been disagreements about election results in this country. The issue? Issues of fraud and election data manipulation at polling stations. There are two prominent parties in my country and every year, the party that doesn’t win always lays claim of fraud on the other party. This is something I believe can be solved with blockchain technology.

As is evident on Hive, every transaction that happens on blockchains are permanently recorded and public, so there’s no room for fraud or disagreement on what is or isn’t. When most people here “transaction”, the first thing that comes to their mind is money. But transactions refer generally to actions on a blockchain.

If Ghana were to employ a blockchain-based election protocol, every vote casted, just like a vote on a Hive post, will be traceable. Accommodations could be made so that everyone of the legal voting age gets registered on the blockchain, with all their credentials covered (in other words, a voters register). This way, every vote cast at any given time by any given person at any given location in the country will be covered live.

The cost this would save us on election budgets would be mind blowing. That would be millionaires if not Billions of Ghana cedis that could be diverted to other pressing concerns of citizens.

Blockchain as an online cloud

I’m not sure who it was I was having a conversation with in the early days I joined Hive, but that person was talking about how they were planning on using Hive as a cloud to save all their memorable pictures they never want to lose. That got me thinking about how blockchain technology could be used as a cloud.

Although, using blockchain technology as a cloud is not really the point I’ll be driving at here. More importantly, the fact that blockchain technology syncs information across multiple devices is something that both our health and education sector could benefit immensely from.

How

In my experience, the average person spends at least 30 minutes to get their folders at the folder record room every time they visit the hospital.

In the health sector, a blockchain-based patient history keeping would mean that patient history could be synced across doctors and they wouldn’t have to form long ques just to get a hold of their “folders” to take to doctors for every visit to the hospital. This would also eliminate the inconvenience of doctors lacking access to patient records once the patient goes to a new doctor in a new hospital that doesn’t have their record.

In the educational system, it would at the least mean access to an unlimited pool of educational resources like books.

Blockchain technology is of course not limited to only the aforementioned points, these just happen to be the most significant areas I see getting transformed by it.

Looks like it’s been a while since you visited the hospital though
The hospital system is actually paperless now
You don’t need any folder you just go with your card they book your appointment to the doctor and you go for consultation
I think it’s been even almost a year now.

Yeah it's been like 2-3 years since I've been at the hospital. Last time I went was I think in 2022? I wrote a rant here on Hive complaining about how I got delayed at the hospital because I had to join a long ass queue to get my folder. Anyways, that's a very interesting development. It can be better if all this is running on top of blockchain. Thanks for the update, Love:)
