A 4-day Internet and Network Service Downtime RantšŸ˜¤ and a Late #LPUDšŸ˜

Iā€™ve been away from Tamale for about 3-4 months now as my current job is in another town far away from where I live.

About 2 weeks ago, we went on vacation and I came back to Tamale. Iā€™m not sure what changed when I left, but both the network and electricity supply has been TERRIBLE since I got back. Which is pretty ironic considering that I just moved from a village (rural area) to a city(urban area). You would expect the city to have the best of both network service and electricity.

I canā€™t even say which is relatively better between the poor network conditions and electricity, because just when I was about to choose the network being better, something happened yesterday that had me rethinking it.

Somewhere around 9:15 yesterday(Wednesday), the two major telecommunication services in Ghana - MTN and Telecel (formerly Vodafone) - went down, reasons being that thereā€™s been a disruption in their international undersea cable. I under normal circumstances would not have a problem with this, except for two things

a) the fact that not one, but two of the major internet service providers in the country simultaneously went down with the same problem/excuse sounded kind of sus to me. It was also a sign of incompetence to me because how do you both just go haywire out of the blue at the same time.

b) I was anticipating a power outage instead of a network issue, because who would be expecting that this would happen? Itā€™s not really a common occurrence, as opposed to the current power on and off crisis weā€™re experiencingā€¦So because I was already expecting it, I wrote two posts in advance just incase an expected power out does happen. I was speechless when it turned out weā€™d have undisrupted power for an entire 24 hours but no access to internet to upload shit. That pissed me off fr.

Now, I have about two days worth of #marchinleo topicā€™s post that canā€™t be posted anymore for the marchinleo challenge sitting in my drafts, and my entry for the splinterlands social media challenge. At least it notā€™s too late for the latter though, right?

Late but not overā€¦

Now Letā€™s Talk Leo

I like how my account has been growing recently in terms of Leo Power, especially considering that I fell of my Leo Goals somewhere in the middle of last year. But ever since I got gifted that INLEO Premium account, everything cane back on track. Itā€™s like that was the little extra jilt I needed to get back on track. I have been writing as consistently as I can for the past few weeks (battling against an unstable electricity supply and shitty network, but more of that in another post probably), gathering rewards and collecting some liquid Leo for today.

I have gathered an amount of 150 LEO to stake today, taking my LP from 2050LP to 2200LP!

Iā€™m hoping that LEO doesnā€™t become too expensive to buy for LPUD as the year progresses, so if all goes as planned, I should be sitting at above 3.5k LP at the least by the end of this year. And if it does become too expensive to buy, wellā€¦.Iā€™ll see you in the bahamasšŸ„‚

I woke up in the middle of the night to drink some water and thought check for updates on the network, and to my surprise, it was up. So Iā€™m putting this post out first to sort of explain whatā€™s happened in case youā€™ve noticed the activity of Africans has dropped in the past 4 days or so. Also because #LPUD is already overdue for 2 days and Iā€™m not sure whether the network might still be stable enough to make this post by the time Iā€™m up in the day. So, yeah. Arigato, and back to sleep I gošŸ™ƒ

I want to make a quick apology to my guild for joining a fray and not being able to play. It was because of this network anomaly. That was the first fray I joined, and I apologize if my inability to play hurt the guild.

Ps: I wrote this post two days ago, 2 days after all this bs started and it was #LPUD. I didnā€™t have time time to update the entire post because of the obvious rush, so some details in this post might refer to ā€œ2 days agoā€ or ā€œYesterdayā€ or a wrong timeline, generally.

It seems all four of Ghana's subsea cable connections to Europe were cut between Senegal and Ivory Coast on March 14th. Problem is impacting much of West Africa.

Hope you're well mate :-)

Our telecommunication services wouldnā€™t even give us details beyond the short explanation above, and because we havenā€™t had internet, we havenā€™t been able to find out for ourselves either. Going to go read up on what the flip actually happened. Better not be a story of some shark that went berserk. Waitā€¦is it the Wakandans:)

Iā€™m okay, man. Just glad this back to the stone age shit is wrapping up.

You might think you are joking about sharks, but that might actually be the reason!

The issue also affected us, but it seems like you guys are the majority shareholder in the pain. Over here we are using some VPN and it seems to work for some reason, @olujay made a post on that. See you when we see you.

Thanks man. I think theirs is way more severe. Maybe X VPN can help them too.

Wicked way to gošŸ˜‚

It seems weā€™re joining the world slowly again. Iā€™ll check the VPN out as soon as I can, man. Thanks:)

Lol, I know what i'm doing.

It seems they've fixed the cable or come up with a temporary solution cause i no longer need the vpn.

Man, I cannot imagine how bad you guys have had it lately. We have been struggling in Nigeria too, but it's not as bad. It's weird to see all my Ghanaian peeps all inactive on Hive for days. Y'all must be so infuriated every second of this problem persists.

If you can manage to download X VPN, do that and change Auto to UDP. I hope it things get better FAST.

Iā€™m telling you, man, this thing gave us a taste of the mild equivalent of life in the stone age. Lol

The interesting thing is that some select few apps have surprisingly been working in the midst of all this. Binance has been one of them, thankfully.

It seems the networkā€™s become a bit stable in the early part of today, but Iā€™ll try the VPN to see how it goes. I just pray itā€™s on the apple play store. Thanks a lot!

Itā€™s really annoying Iā€™m even starting to laugh about how frustrated I was when I realised the internet wasnā€™t working. I was like ā€˜ how would I post on hiveā€™ , ā€˜what do I do nowā€™ , God knows I couldnā€™t even sleep but the harm had already been done.

Itā€™s really surprising how I just woke up today to see the internet working. Ha!

Lol tell me about it. I heard itā€™s a sort of a compromise theyā€™ve employed for us to use until they can fully restore the services to the initial state again. Thank God!

At least itā€™s better than nothing at all.

It goes to show how much we rely on infrastructure more than companies. Both companies had been using the same infrastructure so I donā€™t think itā€™s suspicious but a problem of he days we are living. Itā€™s good to have the infrastructure but for some of these things it should be decentralized to more companies instead of just two. Itā€™s a conundrum though because at least they can mobilize people to fix it, if there were 10 companies they would fight over who fixes it haha.

I actually sadly forgot leo power up day this month! Oops hahaha. Iā€™ll make sure to catch it next month!
