I hope you manage to save it!

Dutch Elm Disease can be devastating; I remember all the elm trees on the street where I grew up died off or were cut down to prevent spread.

I don't know whether there's much you can do, yourself... a professional arborist can inject it with a non-chemical solution that makes it more resistant (this via our son, who's an arborist for the City of Bellevue, WA), but there's no 100% guarantee.

We did speak with a couple arborist and they didn't seem interested in helping us save the tree. They don't work with many elms since they're mostly gone now!
