Family tales

Family_Bus_Collage.jpg

My grandma and grandpa. - My great-grandmother and her father. - The family of my great-great-grandfather, who came from Baden, Germany to Venezuela in the second half of the 19th century.

Last year around this time, after my son left for college, I got it in my head to do some research on my family and ancestors and became interested in genealogy. At that time, I opened an account on Family Search. I wanted to know where some of my ancestors came from and research some of my roots.

After I started this hobby, a few weeks later, my life got complicated with several curve balls, but that's another story. And I forgot about this little hobby. But these days, I have taken it up again.

Last weekend, some of you may recall that I commented that I had attended a family reunion of my mother's paternal family, to whom she was never very close, as her father passed away when she was 15.

That side of the family has German roots. For many years, I used to ask her out of curiosity what she knew about her grandfather and how they came to Venezuela, but she would always tell me the same thing, that she didn't know much about them.

The family reunion, against all odds, was fun. But the best thing is that the group that was created on WhatsApp to organize it has been active afterward and lots of information about the family has come out. In a few days, I have come to know more about my German ancestors and my maternal grandfather's family than in my little more than 50 years of life. Many questions I have asked for years to my mom and aunt have an answer now.

I've seen a picture for the first time of my great-great-grandfather's family, who according to the story came from Baden, Germany in the second half of the 19th century and were among the settlers of la Colonia Tovar, a small town founded by German migrants that until today preserves many of their traditions.

I saw this flowering tree yesterday on my walk.
I have not been able to find the name. Do you know what it is called?

I have resumed the creation of my family tree in Family Search and I hope to be able to get some data and documents that tell me a little more of the history. So far, in a quick search, I have already got two references to the family name. A Venezuelan historian and chronicler named Germán Fleitas Núñez mentions it in his book Palabras al Viento about the settlement in Colonia Tovar. And earlier today, I found another document. This time a degree work about La Colonia Tovar and its foundation, where it is mentioned.

I like family tales. Knowing where we come from has always made me curious. I don't know a single word of German, well actually I know one, Tante. Because that's what we used to call my great-grandfather's younger sister, who I got to know as a child. She is the one sitting on her mother's lap in the photo of the collage. I remember seeing her a couple of times when I was a child and at that time, she was already ancient. Coincidentally, when my husband saw the picture, he said to me, you looked like that baby in your pictures as a child.

And she also looks a little bit like my mother when she was a child, who is the right one in the picture.

So these last few days, I have spent some time researching about my ancestors. Like today, we have a rainy afternoon, perfect for alternating a little bit of Hiving with the search for some family tales.

And you, do you like genealogy?

That's all for today. Happy weekend!

Thank you for reading.

I would have liked to know more about my roots, but my parents have not been open in that regard and did not answer my questions. Especially my mother. So I'm a little afraid to investigate on my own, because I don't trust finding something that could harm me.
I am glad you shared your experience with us. ❤️🤗

I always had a lot of information about my mother's maternal family because they are very close, and also about my father's family. But on the other hand that side of my mother's family was very unknown, with some mystery included, because my grandfather had a couple of children before he married my grandmother, and my mother never treated them too much when she was young. I suppose things were not like they are now in that regard. But anyway, it is interesting to untangle some threads in that sense. But I understand what you say about being afraid to know more if your parents were always secretive about family information.
Abrazos!!

Your grandfather had to be a seductive hunk! You're right, in those years relationships were very different from now. 😊

It never crossed my mind to research about our family tree 😁. Though I know a lot of information about grandparents.

Oh, so you got a mixed blood! Hehe

Yep, mixed blood! Although I think that on this side of the world, it would be rare not to have it, lol

How do you prepare for the trip?

Was it rare? My parents are full blooded Filipinos but if I'm gonna base my skin color, then I can say yeah, I have mixed blood too.
But I don't know what 😁

I am done packing and everything, 😁, just waiting for my flight on Tuesday

Awww... My mother has instilled in us our "Family Memory" since we were children, so everyone here knows our genealogy (by maternal branch) quite well and we have hundreds of stories about it!... It's something nice in my opinion!...

Regarding the geneology by paternal ancestry, this has been more difficult to know because my father was a kind of "Friendly and Partying Hippie Giant" but he barely remembered the names of his grandparents... However, Mom and my sisters (and some cousins on Dad's side) have been finding out on the internet and some consulates (his great-grandparents were Spanish, from the Canary Islands as is now known) now it can be said that "we know much more about our ancestors than Dad ever knew" ha haa haaa... Well, I'm sure that Dad up in heaven already knows them (and is tormenting everyone with his excessive humor)... :))

Beautiful and interesting post!!!...

Thank you for sharing and very happy Sunday full of blessings for you and your family @coquicoin friend!

Yes, I think it's nice too, and my mother's maternal family is very close and there is a lot of information. Not so on her dad's side. However, her paternal cousins, whom she was never very close to, apparently do have a lot more information. And I think that's great and I'm enjoying it a lot. I've always loved learning about family history. I have a lot of old family pictures at home because everything my grandmother and her sisters wanted to throw away in that sense, I would pick it up, lol.

It's great that now you have slowly gathered more information about your paternal family. Family memory is so beautiful and should be preserved.

Thanks so much for the support:)

Have a good night and blessings to you and your family.

Geneaology is fascinating Super Eli, We came to England in 1066 with William the Conqueror from France.

Glad that you are able to do some researching, of course now the internet helps things enormously.

Church records in the olden days though are invaluable as many books are not online!

Yes, church records are invaluable, and the great thing about sites like Family Search is that it has thousands of scanned church record books. I have found the baptismal and marriage records of my grandmother and her sisters. That's pretty cool! And of my grandfather on my dad's side, I've also managed to find some documents.

Have a great Sunday when you wake up, Super Ed!

This is very interesting. I didn't know about Family search, I will research a bit. The past is full of stories we don't know about, and some are worth discovering because we can recognize ourselves in them. Lots of greetings and hugs for you Eli, I hope you are well. 🤗

Your mum and your aunty were so cute when they were little girls.

A few years I had a go at finding a great uncle who came to UK over a century ago. There were some hearsay stories about what happened to him but back in those days paper trail documents were lacking, names translation might have been done wrong and people often changed their date of birth to make them look younger and more employable so I never found him

Thank you :)

What a pity you could never find more information about your great uncle. I have found some information about my mom's maternal family thanks to some marriage certificates I got from Family Search, but in some cases, it is almost impossible to trace.
