People from the 60s and Smartphones

I remember back then in the year 2001 when my dad was using the 3310, the phone was scarce and expensive at that time so not everyone was opportune to have one... It was the day that calls business center were still making monies, anyone that dares to open a call center now would pack up in no time because phones are a thing owned by many people now...

I used to pick up the phone whenever my dad is sleeping to play games on it, it is not as if there are plenty of games there, just the snake game, he must not catch me, so I always sneak into his room, pick up the phone and sneak back to the parlor, play for like 20 minutes, and also sneak back to drop it because I fear what he will do if he catches me pressing his phone...

As the year passes, new phones were invented, the Symbian, blackberry then the Asha, and others, but my dad stick with the old model until I traveled home one day and told him people no longer use this kind of phone and told him to buy a smartphone, he obliged and bought one....

Since I was the one that persuaded him into buying one, it is my responsibility to also teach him how to make use of it...

One thing that is common with people from the '60s is that they are not after many things on the smartphone, the list of things they want to know is not much and I will use my dad's own as an example...

  • Calls: This is the first thing he wanted to learn, since the button are different and the phone is screen touch, he wants to know how to make calls, receive calls, and also search for his contact...

  • Songs and Videos: He loves to watch films so he also wanted to learn how to play songs and music, I made sure to give him many songs and videos so he can have enough to listen to whenever he wants [music]..

  • Download: It was the waptrick.com website we use for downloading songs and videos at that time, I helped him to bookmark it and taught him how to get to the page so he can download things he need...

He did not get them at once, I can't count the number of times he called me to teach him all over again, at some point I got tired but then I do not have a choice but to keep repeating it till he finally got it...

Recently I told him to download bank apps but he refused, I told him to open another bank account today as well, but he still refused saying he can't go through bank stress, I told him it is online banking but he was not ready to listen so I gave up...

Teaching people in the 60s how to use smartphones can be tiring, so the best is just to teach them the basic of what they need to know...

It is can be tiring, true. It is like repeating the same all over and over again.

They are quite so different with their phones and ours.

yea since they were not used to it from the beginning, they were used to their old phone just meant for calling and they are not ready to adjust to the new changes

You are right bro, tecahing them the basic will definitely go a long way and also make them get interested in other things on the phone.

Nokia 3310 was a king among phones back then and I was happy when my mom upgraded from Nokia 5110 to 3310. The snake game was epic, thanks for sharing and bringing back beautiful memories of the past.

gone are those days, now no one will appreciate if someone gift them such phones not knowing they use to be what everyone wanted in the past lol

That's the approach I try to use with my mum, teach her the basics and let her figure out the rest on her own. I noticed that people from the 60s don't have the curiosity to explore smartphones, they prefer doing the bare minimum and be done with it. This is good sometimes, less explaining for the teacher :)

Lol. I am even impressed that your dad was willing to learn some older folks would just throw their hands up in the air and not want to have anything to do with it.

Your dad does not want to go through the stress alone of opening a bank app online. Lol
Those old people only limit themselves to calling and receiving calls, then they love to listen to daily news just like my Dad.

The best is to be patient and endure till they learn.

Many of our parents are like that. I think they are just not interested in new techs. My mother doesn't like the idea of using a new phone just because she has to learn how to use it. And really, you can't blame her. It takes her months or even years to understand the basic features in a mobile phone.
