Feeling Spooky: A #threetunestuesdasy post

When I was a little kid, there was a hallway in my parents house that freaked me out. It's actually the only hallway in the whole house, but it was just so long and dark. I would often not go down the hallway without turning on the light, or run down the hallway to get from one place to the other as quickly as possible.

In reality, it's only about 15 feet long, but it's still pretty rare that I ever go down to the very end of that hallway even today.

In case you missed the memo, it's Halloween today. It's the day that kids get to dress up as their favorite characters, college kids get to wear less clothes than they would at the beach, and couples get to show off just how clever they are with their couples costume.

I've never been much of a Halloween guy. Christmas was always more my jam back when I actually cared more about national holidays. I'd still say I lean more towards the Thanksgiving/Christmas season these days. Many of you may not recall this, but during the 80's there was a huge scare about random halloween candy and how it was laced with something or full of needles. I honestly don't remember, but the necessity for parents to inspect every piece of candy we got kind of ruined the whole mood.

Rumors like that still go around every now and then today, but with the introduction of fentanyl and designer drugs that look like candy, it's probably even more relevant.

One thing that's never been a huge thing on my list is scary movies. I'm equal parts fascinated and disinterested in them. Usually, I just look them up on the Internet and read a plot summary to see how clever or twisted they are/were. If there is something on during the day, I might flip back and forth between that and a sporting event on the weekend, but I don't actively follow the latest horror flicks.

If anything, I lean more towards the classics like Poltergeist and Halloween.

In case you haven't guessed, given it is Halloween, and it is Tuesday, the theme for this #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze is going to be "Spooky".

I jumped into my Google Photos library and typed in the word "Spooky" and the two photos I have shared are just a couple of the ones that came up. They seem pretty fitting to me.

You didn't come here for the photos though, let's get to the music!

Quite some time ago there was a show on TV called "Justified". It's probably one of my favorite shows of all time and I remember in one episode there was kind of a throw away call out to Atlanta Rhythm Section's Champagne Jam Live album. That prompted me to take a deep dive into ARS and their music.

While I had heard the original version of "Spooky" before by the Classics IV, I didn't realize that two members of that band went on to join Atlanta Rhythm Section and that is why ARS recorded their version of Spooky.

The original version was actually an instrumental only and later when lyrics were added it hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The ARS version on the other hand, only ever made it up to 17 on the Billboard charts.

It feels only right that I should also include something by Rob Zombie in this weeks list. "Dragula" is probably one of the only Rob Zombie songs I actually know. Back when he was with White Zombie I didn't listen to any of his music. It's actually after he went solo that he got on my radar.

Actually funny story, growing up with my peer group at church we were discouraged from listening to White Zombie because it was considered satanic. Given the stuff that is out there these days, I am guessing White Zombie would probably be considered pretty tame.

The main reason I needed to include something by Rob is simply for the fact that he has created several horror movies himself and he also revived the Halloween franchise. All the antics and optics aside, he is actually a pretty creative guy. The Halloween reboots were critical successes if I recall correctly.

You should definitely check them out. I'd watch the originals first, so you can really appreciate them. Just skip III. That one has nothing to do with anything and is pointless.

It couldn't be more simple than this one. The "Halloween" theme from the movie Halloween by John Carpenter. @mrsbozz will actually leave the room when this song comes on. She can't stand it. Looking back now, I will totally admit that Halloween isn't the scariest movie out there. As far as slashers go, it isn't even the goriest (not even close), but there is just something classic about it.

Michael Myers isn't fast, or clever, he is just constant, consistent, and inevitable. I think that is what makes him so scary. We have Halloween to thank for introducing the world to Jamie Lee Curtis, Danielle Harris, and ultimately a pop culture icon that will be remembered for decades.

All thanks to a Captain Kirk mask that they melted down to use for the movie.

I was going to throw in a bonus tune for you, but I decided not to. It was going to be a song from Phantom of the Opera because although many see it as a love story, it's more of a horror story to me. In fact, if you ever read the book, it's actually closer to a horror story that you would believe.

There are certain aspects of the musical that don't actually make as much sense unless you have read the book. You can find a bit more about it here.

Thanks, I appreciate it. It's not that I hate the holiday, but I just have never been really into it like some people. My wife and I don't even hand out candy.

I really love how you came up with your childhood story and linked it to Halloween.
Someone like me is always scared of darkness up till now but I'm working towards conquering it
Happy Halloween!

I like to do a little more than just throw some songs out. That's usually why I try to do some kind of theme. Thanks for stopping by!

Some fun songs! Great picks for Halloween. There was a hallway in an office I used to rent that was like the one in your parents place. When it was dark something just didn't feel right, none of my staff would go in after dark, they were scared of it...

I'm more a Christmas guy too, as a kid I remember some idiots putting razor blades in apples back in the 80's. Too many crazy people out there!

I didn't realize people actually did that! I thought it was just a hoax or an urban legend. I guess I really dodged a bullet making it through the 80's intact! That's creepy about the hallway. Our house was a manufactured home, so it's not like it had a history or anything. Just the overactive imagination of an elementary school kid!

One thing that's never been a huge thing on my list is scary movies. I'm equal parts fascinated and disinterested in them.

That so well sums up how I feel about horror movies. I think the last time I really cared to watch a scary movie was An American Werewolf in London which I actually loved as a little kid. But if I remember right, wasn't there actually a lot of funny bits in that movie? I should watch it again as an adult. I just remember my mom had the "Making of Thriller" VHS tape which featured the guy who did all of the makeup for Michael Jackson and designed everything. He was the same guy who created the Werewolf in London transformation. I was mesmerized by it as a kid.

@mrsbozz will actually leave the room when this song comes on. She can't stand it.

Haha! If I play that tune on the keyboard Amanda yells 'OMG stop it!"

I just love to wind her up sometimes.

I'm the same way with my wife. Sometimes it is just so fun to drive her crazy. One day she might actually call my bluff and leave me though! I think the most recent horror item I willingly watched of my own volition was American Horror Story though I stopped watching around the sixth season or so. Those first two or three seasons were pretty fantastic. I don't remember An American Werewolf in London, but back in the day there was a scary Disney movie called The Watcher in the Woods. That thing terrified me. Turned out it was more mystery/science fiction than horror, but it was still pretty unnerving.

I don't think I saw The Watcher in the Woods. I will have to ask Amanda about that one. She has seen everything Disney.

The closes thing to horror I've watched in the last few years was The Walking Dead. We got up a good way through the seasons but at some point we just stopped watching it. It was all death and destruction and horrible stuff happening without a single breather. I felt like it had not a single light at the end of any tunnel. For me, a show or a movie needs at least a little relief. But of course, a zombie show isn't really horror, but it has a lot of the same elements.

I totally understand what you are saying. A little bit of levity is necessary sometimes. My wife and I watched a couple dramas this summer and there were zero good guys and zero laughs. It made it hard to keep watching. Even at its most raw, Breaking Bad threw in a couple laughs here and there.

Great selection Bozz. That Halloween tune somehow gives you the shivers alright!! I like that version of Spooky and didnt realise it was the original version or without lyrics even was original. I only remember the awesome version by Dusty Springfield from the movie Lock Stock..

Yeah, Dusty Springfield is pretty cool. They have a couple songs I like and although it has been a while since I saw Lock Stock... I didn't remember they did this version in it. Thanks for the reminder!

Ah yes, the 80s, when everything was thought to be satanic and the news was so freaked out about it. Do you remember the D&D scare, when the news had the entire country convinced that anyone playing that game was worshiping the devil? Heavy metal was considered satanic too, with their backward lyrics and weird dressing. The fear machine was working even back then.

Heh yeah Dragula seems to be the one Rob Zombie song everyone knows. The best part of the music video is they are driving Grandpa's car from the Munsters! (Which was called Dragula)

Good picks!

Yeah, I remember that with D&D. I actually probably would have been really into it given how much of a nerd I am, but I never bothered because of the stigma. I do have to admit, I miss a bit of the wholesomeness from that time. Misguided or not, people just seemed more decent.

Growing up in the Philippines, Halloween, trick or treating, and wearing costumes weren't a thing. Maybe it's because we are too Catholic that it didn't really got popular. There were still spooky stories because we still remember the dead on All souls day. It has changed over the years, and there are more trick or treating going on now, and it is a shame I didn't get to experience it and get a lot of chocolates during my childhood.

Dragula is a banger. That is the only song I know of Rob Zombie, and I knew it from a playstation game, Twisted Metal. Thank you for sharing it, and I was able to reminisce of fun childhood times.

Oh wow, that is interesting that you didn't get to participate. You honestly didn't miss out on too much. All that candy likely would have made you fat like me anyway!

Haha, a lot of the candies would have been confiscated anyways. Our family has a history of Diabetes and my parents were very conscious of it when we were growing up.
