Florida: More than just a punchline

Somewhere along the line, Florida became the butt of a lot of jokes. I'm not sure if it is political, social, or something else, but somehow it gained a reputation. To the point that I think even Netflix created a series called "Florida Man". If you have seen a wacky headline in the past couple of years, it is pretty much a given that "Florida Man does blank" was somewhere in the title.

It's been a long time since I have visited Florida. In fact, if I had to guess, it has likely been close to 15 years. I little doubt much has changed since I last set foot in the state.

What I do know is that despite all the ridicule and embarrassment, The Florida Gators gave the state some thing to be proud of yesterday.

After an almost four hour weather delay in Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series semifinal game, The Gators laid down a 9 to 3 beating on an Oklahoma team that hasn't lost a tournament game in 20 strait games.

Did you catch that? Given the fact that Oklahoma has won the championship the past three years in a row, that's no small feat!

For a while there it looked like Oklahoma was going to roll right through the bracket again. Texas had no problem doing that. They beat Stanford 1 to 0 last night to punch their ticket to the championship game and send Stanford back home to California.

With the win, Florida is slated to play again today since it is a double elimination tournament. Both Florida and Oklahoma have one loss, so this is a winner take all game today. I don't think I could even guess which way it is going to go.

Oklahoma is a good team, so I can see them bouncing back, but Florida is hungry and they are itching to prove they deserve to keep playing.

What I do know is that it has been a blast to watch! You better believe when 2 PM comes around I will be tuning in today. This tournament has been plagued by bad weather since they settled in to OKC. Hopefully they don't have to deal with that too much today.

Whichever way it goes, Texas is at a bit of an advantage. They get a day off to rest and recuperate today. That could give them the edge tomorrow when they face either Oklahoma or Florida for the first game of the best of three championship series.

Another thing I also know is that Florida has been relying heavily on their freshman pitcher lately. If she's doing this well now as a freshman, imagine how well she will be doing in a couple of years!

Wow!
