My Share of Unfairness

Most times life isn’t everything we expect it to be. I will always tell people that you might not know what a person’s character is until you spend a few days with them. Most people are sweet on the outside but just spend a few days with them and that is when you will see their true personality as it is difficult for them to hide it.

When I gained admission into my tertiary institution, things weren’t so stable at home. So at that point, I couldn’t stay around the school environment, since there was no money for accommodation at that point as all the money was used to settle my fees and books, and it was very expensive since it was my first year and I had to pay for several things. There wasn’t any money left to get me a place and I do not stay in Hostels due to my fragile health.

My school is very far from my house, so going to school from home was a bit difficult, most times I leave the house very early and return late at night and don’t get enough sleep. On a certain day, I slept in a cab when going to school and I passed my stopping point as I was exhausted.

Well, my aunt stays close to my school so my dad discussed it with her and she finally allowed me to stay. I was super excited going over there at first because she was my favorite aunt, but then I regretted ever going over there. The house was full as she had 6 kids and a helper as well then me included. I thought coming over there could help reduce my stress but I think my stress level tripled.

I had my lectures start by 8 am to end by 4 pm every day. I turned to a second helper and didn’t even have time for myself. She made it a routine that I am awake by 4 am and I am bathing 6 of my nieces. Afterwards, I will help dress them up for school and while they eat I will try to prepare myself for lectures too. When I come back from lectures when I am exhausted, that is when I will start assisting in the kitchen. We made soup every day as they prefer fresh foods.

Cooking takes a lot of time and before I have dinner it is either 10 pm or 11 pm. Then I and the help will have to clean up the kitchen before going to bed. Sometimes when I stay up to read, I don’t even sleep at all because I know that by 4 am I will be up again. Most nights, I cried silently because I didn’t want to tell my dad since there was no money for accommodation so I had to endure so I could go to school.

I was able to confide in my elder sister, Who told my dad and mom. When my dad confronted her about the stress I was going through and how she needed to reduce my chores so I could rest a bit and read. She said, “I am not the first to go to school”. That statement made my dad take me away from there because I was looking so skinny that you would think I would vanish the next minute.

Eventually, there was a deal my dad got immediately after I left there and then he rented a place for me in school. Good thing I came out with a good result after all the stress I had to go through. Most times our favorite people treat us in the worst ways.
