South Island of New Zealand: Garden Photos and Stories

avatar

Hello, everyone.

I've reached my destination in the Marlborough Sounds on the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand.

Here are some photos and accompanying brief stories that I shot today on the property where I am staying. I will make another post of some of the surrounding landscape features within the next week.

I hope you enjoy them.

I am standing in the shade under the pine trees by the front fence. In front of me is the only dirt road out of the bay. In front of that is the water. I could literally throw a stone.

The trees I am standing under in the previous photo. In the foreground are grape vines. Their fruit will ripen in the upcoming weeks.

The pumpkin patch being allowed to escape onto the lawn. They are an ironbark heritage breed called 'triamble'.

Part of the vegetable patch, showing courgettes, basil, tomatoes, potatoes. Surrounded by netting to keep out the local weka bird. Maybe I can get a photo of a weka in the garden for my next post.

I'm not sure about the species of these flowers. They are growing amongst the harakeke leaves.

Dahlia flowers with the hills in the background. A stream runs just out of shot, down and to the left.

At the back of the property, this path leads to the stream, which is the water supply, and through into a patch of natives. I will get more photos of this area for my next post.

Lemon tree, incense holder, masonry bolt, fishing line, new coat of light green paint.

The hills behind the property again. The power line which is the link to civilisation. The red-fleshed peach tree.

IMG_20220217_133602.jpg

And last but not least, a collection of local stones and found objects, including stag horns.

That's all. I hope you enjoyed these images from the Marlborough Sounds. More photos will come soon of the surrounding area that I will take on some of my walks.

Take care and stay safe.

I am having a great time, thanks. I feel very safe and isolated and it hasn't yet begun to get too cold.

This looks beautiful. Dahlia flowers are my favorites and I really enjoyed my stay in NZ back in 2013. Such a great place to live.

My wife and I have looking into moving there, but we only score 145 points. Maybe after the pandemic dies down a bit.

Kia ora! I came across your post here while browsing through the post-promo channel of the luv_18px.png LUV server. Anything to do with 🇳🇿 Aotearoa / New Zealand catches my eye, because I live in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. I am always keen to see what people are saying about my homeland, and particularly if it is someone travelling in our country from overseas. From the looks of your profile here on HIVE, it looks like you are a fellow Kiwi. Ka pai!

Your pictures are great. I'm particularly curious about an object in your rock garden in the last photo. Is that a carved pounamu / greenstone design, just in front and to the left of the large piece of driftwood in the foreground? It looks shiny, polished, so I guess it is a taonga whakarākei / jewellery of some description.
