The Brazil that tourists don't know.

When Brazilians think about the advantages of living in another country, one of the reasons that tops the list is safety. Despite Brazil being an incredible country with many natural beauties and warm people, it is still a very insecure place to live in some states.

To give you an idea, in 2022 alone, there were 47,508 violent deaths, and even so, this number represented a decrease of 2.4% and reached the lowest level since 2011. It's an absurd number, but it represents just one aspect of the crime, unfortunately, if we consider robberies and rape, this number becomes much higher. For example, there is an estimate of at least 822,000 rapes per year. For me, as a woman, this is truly a terrifying number.

People in Brazil live in fear, especially women. Personally, I don't feel comfortable taking an Uber alone, nor using my cell phone at a bus stop. If we use bicycles, we always have to carry a lock with a cable to secure it somewhere, or else it will be stolen. But despite the insecurity, I have only been robbed twice in my life: once at the beginning of my pregnancy and once towards the end. Both times, a gun was pointed at me, and my cell phone was taken.

These robberies happened six years ago, and since then, I've been fortunate not to be robbed again, and there have been no reports of robberies among my closest family members. However, we know that this is something that tends to happen, especially if you are in large city centers late at night. Another common thing is theft at parties. People who often record the concerts they attend are the prime targets. If a criminal happens to be passing by, they will certainly try to snatch the phone from your hand.

Unfortunately, I haven't even covered half of it. So many horrible situations occur due to Brazil's high crime rate that as I think and write this post, I'm becoming somewhat depressed. Recently, in Rio de Janeiro, two children died from stray bullets due to clashes between police and drug traffickers in the favelas. These kinds of situations happen there every year, and dozens of families suffer simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Still, I love my country and enjoy living in Rio Grande do Norte, the state where I reside. Even though I have to be vigilant when walking on the street and hardly ever go out with my cell phone unless I'm using a bag or a backpack. But honestly, if I had the chance to go to a more developed country, I would go. I would spend three to five years there, saving up some money to come back later. I've thought about this hundreds of times, but until today, I haven't been able to organize myself enough or get rid of the unforeseen events that happen. For example, I was very close to going to Portugal, but a major personal issue occurred that prevented me from moving forward.

Despite all these negative points, Brazil is a great country for tourism. In tourist spots, you rarely face risks, and it's really worth getting to know our nature and our people, who are beautiful, diverse, and friendly. I dream of the day when the authorities will do truly effective work so that Brazil's security won't be a problem anymore, and people can stop being afraid of something as trivial as walking alone on quieter streets under a starry sky.

Quando brasileiros pensam nas vantagens de viver em outro país um dos motivos que está no topo da lista é a segurança. Por mais que o Brasil seja um país incrível com muitas belezas naturais e pessoas calorosas, ainda é um lugar muito inseguro para se viver em alguns estados.

Pra vocês terem uma ideia, só em 2022 aconteceram 47.508 mortes violentas, e mesmo assim, esse número representou uma queda de 2,4% e atingiu o menor patamar desde 2011. É um numero absurdo mas que representa apenas um dos aspectos da criminalidade, infelizmente se levarmos em conta roubos e estupro, esse número se torna muito maior. Por exemplo, existe uma estimativa de que haja pelo menos 822 mil estupros por ano. Para mim, que sou uma mulher, esse é um número realmente aterrorizante.

As pessoas no Brasil vivem com medo, principalmente mulheres. Eu particularmente não me sinto confortável de pegar um uber sozinha, nem de usar o celular num ponto de ônibus. Se usamos bicicletas, precisamos levar conosco sempre um cabo com um cadeado para prende-la em algum lugar se não roubam. Mas, apesar da insegurança, eu só fui assaltada duas vezes na minha vida: uma no início da gravidez, outra no final da gravidez. Nas duas vezes apontaram uma arma pra mim e levaram meu celular.

Esses assaltos aconteceram há 6 anos, desde então, tive a sorte de não ser mais assaltada, e também não há relato de assaltos entre meus familiares mais próximos, porém sabemos queue é algo que tende acontecer principalmente se você está em grandes centros tarde da noite. Outra coisa que é comum é haver furtos em festas. Pessoas que costumam filmar os shows que frequentam são os maiores alvos, se algum bandido estiver passando na hora ele vai tentar arrancar o celular da sua mão com toda certeza.

Infelizmente, eu não falei nem metade. Acontecem tantas situações horríveis por causa da alta criminalidade do Brasil que enquanto eu penso e escrevo esse post vou ficando um tanto deprimida. Recentemente, no Rio de Janeiro morreram duas crianças por balas perdida por causa de embates entre policiais e traficantes nas favelas cariocas. Esse tipo de situação acontecem lá todos os anos e dezenas de famílias sofrem por simplesmente estarem no lugar errado e na hora errada.

Ainda assim, eu amo meu país e gosto de viver no Rio Grande do Norte, que é o estado onde moro. Por mais que eu tenha que estar sempre atenta quando estou andando na rua e dificilmente saia com o celular a não ser que esteja usando uma bolsa ou uma mochila. Mas, honestamente, se eu tivesse a chande de ir pra um país mais desenvolvido, eu iria. Passaria três ou cinco anos lá, juntando algum dinheiro pra depois voltar. Já pensei nisso centenas de vezes, mas até hoje não consegui me organizar o suficiente nem me livrar dos imprevistos que acontecem. Por exemplo, já estive muito perto de ir pra Portugal, mas aconteceu um grande problema na minha vida pessoal que me impediu de seguir em frente.

Apesar de todos esses pontos negativos, o Brasil é um ótimo país para turísmo. Nos pontos turísticos dificilmente você corre riscos, além de valer apena demais conhecer nossa natureza e nosso povo que é muito bonito, diversificado e amigável. Eu sonho com o dia em que os governantes farão um trabalho realmente efetivo pra que a segurança do Brasil não seja mais um problema e que as pessoas possam parar de sentir medo de algo tão bobo que é andar sozinho por ruas mais silenciosas sob um céu estrelado.
