Can Threads Bring More People Into Web3 Than Gaming?

When it comes to Web3 adoption, gaming seems to get all of the love and attention - and rightfully so in many cases. People love games and we've seen the amount of gamers grow over time, both casual and pro. With the advent of mobile gaming and free to play it really took off in the 2010s and the narrative now is that gaming is eating the world.

Yet my reent experience has been a little different.

Now take this with a grain of salt, it is a sample size of n=1 and confined purely to my network, but I have to say that the conversations I have around Leo Threads and social media adoption are having way more traction right now with the average person.

Most people use social media in one form or another, regardless of age or generation. Social media apps also tend to age up over time, starting with kids and slowly having adults and grandparents jumping in when we reach critical mass.

With the world economy seeming to hang in the balance and even the financially illiterate noticing that inflation has driven prices of everything they need up, it's not surprising that people would look into alternative ways to make money.

So when I bring up the topic that I'm involved with crypto gaming as well as crypto based social media like Hive blogging and more specifically, Threads - I am genuinely shocked to get more interest in how you can earn money by just using social media rather than playing games.

Now part of this may be the early stage at which web3 gaming finds itself, but it doesn't change the fact that there is a deep interest in social media and using a twitter-like app in Threads to add value to the conversation while receiving value in return. It's happened with multiple people in multiple conversations over the past few weeks and I plan to continue having these conversations.

I'm curious though - is it just me? What has your experience been like trying to onboard people into Web3?

I think splinterlands is the door to gaming and accessibility to hive, but over the years, I don't think we've had a lot of adoption and influx of new users, maybe it's because of the bear market, maybe not. But I still feel that the both, threading or microblogging are key.

Splinterlands brought in a huge wave, including myself. I think it will continue to do so next bull run too, but Threads has so much potential.
