The Trojan Horse

Today, I don't plan to talk about security issues and computer viruses but about the real Troian Horse. The one Homer wrote about in his Iliad that allowed the Greeks to finally conquer the city of Priam...

Yesterday we went on a journey that took us from Europe to Asia over a totally newly built bridge that crosses the straits of Dardanelles in northern Turkey. The suspension bridge is said to be the longest in Europe with close to 3 km and links Asia to Europe. Before the bridge was finished all the traffic was shipped over ferries boats and there were often cues to get on board.

When we crossed the bridge there was a lot of wind and we could actually feel the bridge moving. That wasn't the nicest experience...

source: google maps, the antique city of Troya is located in Turkey about 30 KM south-west of the city of Canakkale

After 1 hour on the road we have reached the antique city of Troy. Thanks to my brother in laws' cunning we managed to enter the area at about 10% of the costs that normal tourists have to pay. The first thing that you see is a replica of the wooden horse.

We then visited the excavation site. It's actually quite complex to follow because there are 10 cities that are one above the others. The place was inhabited since 3000 BC. The city was destroyed or abandoned several times but people always rebuilt a settlement in the same location. It was inhabited by hitites, greek and romans among others. And of course it was the theater of the 10 year long conflict that opposed the greeks of Ulysses and Achilles against Hector and Paris.

There is even a big history linked to excavation of the city with a treasure that has been stolen by Heinrich Schliemann.

In short the city is full of legends and it was really worth to visit the Museum that gives a nice overview of most of them.

It was a lovely day full of impressions that I won't forget easily.
