Polish Day in the Gardens / Polský den v zahradách

I don't know if all embassies in every country in the world do this. But it's true that the Polish Embassy in the Czech Republic organizes this event every year.
Just as an aside. How many people in Poland actually wear traditional costumes on a regular basis? I think it’s probably similar to here in the Czech Republic—a few hundred people. So what we’re seeing here is intended for tourists. The tourism industry is an important source of income for both individuals and the state. There’s nothing we can do about it.

Nevím, jestli to tak dělají všechna velvyslanectví ve všech zemích světa. Je ale pravda, že polské velvyslanectví v České republice tuto akci pořádá každý rok.
Jen tak na okraj. Kolik lidí asi v Polsku chodí běžně v krojích? Myslím, že to bude podobné jako u nás, v České republice. Několik stovek lidí. Takže co tu vidíme, to je určeno pro turisty. Turistický průmysl je důležitý zdroj příjmů pro jednotlivce i pro stát. To se nedá nic dělat.

I won’t keep you waiting. I’m writing about an event that took place on June 20, 2026. It was organized by the Polish Embassy in the Czech Republic and the Polish Institute. Here’s a link to the official website. The text is in Czech and Polish, but a translation tool can easily handle it.

I’ll be honest. The event took place in the embassy’s garden. These gardens are part of the complex known as the South Gardens of Prague Castle. Some of them are open to the public. Some require an admission fee. And some aren’t open to the public at all. Like the one at the Polish Embassy. My main goal was to get into that garden.

This is the view I came here to see.

Budu upřímný. Akce se konala v zahradě velvyslanectví. Tyto zahrady jsou součástí areálu známého jako Jižní zahrady Pražského hradu. Některé z nich jsou přístupné veřejnosti. Do některých je třeba zaplatit vstupné. A některé nejsou pro veřejnost přístupné vůbec. Jako ta u polského velvyslanectví. Mým hlavním cílem bylo dostat se právě do téhle zahrady.
Tohle je ten výhled, kvůli kterému jsem sem přišel.

But I wasn't just here to enjoy the beautiful views. There was also the event itself.

Ale nebyl jsem tu jen proto, abych si užil krásné výhledy. Byla tu také samotná akce.

And so I divided my attention—between the views and the people.

A tak jsem rozdělil svou pozornost – mezi výhledy a lidi.

It was often quite difficult to decide what I actually wanted to photograph. On top of that, the temperature hovered around 30° Celsius. (I didn't know then that in 14 days the temperature in Prague would be over 40° C. )

Často bylo docela těžké se rozhodnout, co vlastně chci vyfotit. K tomu všemu se venkovní teplota ve stínu pohybovala kolem 30° C.
(To jsem ještě nevěděl, že za 14 dnů bude teplota v Praze přes 40° C.)

Denying climate change is definitely foolish. I don't remember weather like this in my 60 years of life.

Popírání klimatické změny je rozhodně hloupost. Takové počasí za 60 let svého života nepamatuji.

But let’s leave climatology and meteorology behind and return to the garden.
We, the Czechs and Poles, belong to the West Slavic language group. We can understand each other. I didn’t hear any English in the garden. People were speaking Polish and Czech there. I’m not claiming that we understand each other perfectly.
A Polish friend once told me that a Czech person starts to understand and speak Polish after spending nine days in Poland. Each day can be replaced by three beers.

Ale nechme na chvíli stranou klimatologii a meteorologii a vraťme se do zahrady.
My, Češi a Poláci, patříme do západoslovanské jazykové skupiny. Rozumíme si. V zahradě jsem neslyšel žádnou angličtinu. Lidé tam mluvili polsky a česky. Netvrdím, že si rozumíme dokonale.
Jeden polský přítel mi jednou řekl, že Čech začne rozumět a mluvit polsky po devíti dnech strávených v Polsku. Každý den lze nahradit třemi pivy.

Speaking of beer... It was flowing freely here. In the Czech lands (Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia), we drink beer, wine, and spirits.

Když už je řeč o pivu... To tu teklo proudem. V Českých zemích (Čechy, Morava a Slezsko) pijeme jak pivo, tak víno a destiláty.

But the vineyards in our northern neighbor’s country surprised me. Well, more evidence of climate change. Soon, we’ll be switching from potatoes and grains to melons and citrus fruits in agriculture.

Vinařství v zemi našeho severního souseda mě ale opravdu překvapilo. No, další důkaz klimatické změny. Brzy přejdeme v zemědělství od brambor a obilovin k melounům a citrusovým plodům.

But of course, it wasn't all about alcohol here. There was also a steady stream of cultural events. The singer was just saying that she's from Silesia, that she doesn't care whether she speaks and sings in Czech, Polish, or German. She said they switch between those languages at home, too.

Ale samozřejmě, že to tady nebylo o alkoholu. Taky tu běžel proud kulturních akcí. Zpěvačka zrovna říkala, že je ze Slezska, že jí je jedno, jestli mluví a zpívá česky, polsky nebo německy. Že ty jazyky střídají i u ní doma.

There was music and dancing, and armed men performed historical fencing demonstrations.
