It was bad of that Elder to not have returned what he borrowed or even called to explain the delay. It was wrong on all levels. People break promises, yes. But this one did have a remedy.

lol, what should I have done? grief, mourn, and become depressed due to heartbreak? Some people are not worth crying over, and one of the best ways to get rid of your feelings for someone is to be in a relationship with another...
We learn from bad experience, the elder saga taught me no one can be trusted especially when it has to deal with money, we are humans regardless of the position we hold.
