It is the wife's family that decides the kind of wedding the couple will have.
I do not know what tribe your friend is from but even though the wife's family is to decide the type of wedding to be held, the wife herself has the upper hand. It's her wedding and if she knows the financial situation of the person she's about to marry then she can talk to her family about it.
So it's either they're purposely trying to put so much pressure on the young man(which isn't a good thing) or they don't fully know about his financial situation(which isn't a good thing either).
Nonetheless, I like the advices you gave him. If he has the means to take a loan, why not make an invest that will not only take care of the marriage expenses but foot some bills in the long run. Or just do a court marriage if it's something urgent.
Thank you for this, I also believe the wife should be able to talk to her family not to put pressure on him, but some ladies encourages their family on this matter because it is also something they want. Big wedding to impress
