The rest of the story

In my previous post, I said I’d buy every property available in the port city. But first, I’ll have to make a detour to the cities of Sho-Battai, Heft and Stoat to find a mechanical arm. Yes, remember that you start the game missing an arm, so you can’t fight or carry two-handed items.

So, we’re off again, crossing an arid desert full of people and creatures who want us dead. First stop: Sho-Battai.

We’ve barely made it out of town before we’re attacked. Let’s see if I can win the fight with the little mace I have and my pitiful level 1 combat and defense stats. Luckily, I’m wearing good armor—too heavy for me at my current level, which slows me down in combat and while travelling through the desert, but at least human attacks hurt a little less.

I won the fight, though I took a beating in the process. All right, I’ll take your gear—and whatever else I find along the way. Just enough to have a few things to sell when I reach my destination.

The good thing is that I have a few bandages to patch myself up, so I can start improving my healing skill, too.

No luck: just 25 metres further on, I get caught up in a battle between merchants and raiders. The raiders attacked me while I was following some merchants who were also heading to Sho-Battai. Like I said, in this game, you’re nobody—and definitely not the hero of the story.

I managed to get out of it. Then, barely 100 metres further on, I spotted some slave traders, so I’m going to take a detour to avoid them.

Finally, a bit of luck! I ran into the region’s guardians, who fight monsters, slavers and anyone else who preys on the weak. I’ll follow them. If they happen to head where I’m going, great. If they go to one of the other towns instead, that’s fine too—I’ve got errands to run in all three.

The guards turned back halfway there, so I kept going as best I could. I came across a few clan battles and fights between humans and creatures. I kept moving slowly in stealth mode, watching the fights from a distance and setting off again once everyone scattered. Unfortunately, neither my companion nor I had any room left in our inventories to loot the corpses, so I carried on. I’m already halfway there.

Incredible luck: I ran into a representative from Sho-Battai who was heading back to the city, so I’ll follow them. Hopefully, no one will dare attack them—and if they do, I’ll let them fight for me. Yes, I’m still just as much of a coward.

Oh no—there were a few fights along the way with common bandits, and they still managed to wipe out most of my current protectors.

And, of course, some monsters show up right in the middle of the fight. Grrrr!

And finally, Sho-Battai! I’m going to run a few errands here. If I need more money, I’ll go on a few trips around the city to collect the corpses of monsters or criminals the guards have beaten up.

And here’s why I wanted to come here. I sold everything I found along the way, and now it’s time to visit:

• The Thieves Guild. It costs 10,000 cats to join, but once you’ve paid, the guild will protect you in every city where it has a branch. You’ll also get food and a bed. You can use their services if you escape slavery or prison, including getting a new face. They also have training equipment to help you gain your first levels in certain skills. The guild buys all stolen items—except anything stolen from them—and sells exclusive goods. That’s what I’m after.

I picked up a small backpack from them while I was there. It’s not the best one, but if you want the Thieves Guild to offer you better-quality items—backpacks, clothes, armor, weapons and so on—you’ll need to bring them more stolen goods. But looting towns and shops can wait. For now, I’ve got some training to do at the Thieves Guild, then we’re off to Heft.

Let’s do all the training available at the guild before we leave.

First, they offer lockpicking training up to level 20. Be careful: Stealth is the skill that lets you move unnoticed through a crowd, but Thievery is a separate skill. Even if you’re invisible, you still make noise when stealing. And being invisible doesn’t mean you’re a good assassin, either. Anyway, let’s get our lockpicking up to 20.

I recommend putting on a TV show while the game levels up your skill, because it takes 35 minutes.

Once that’s done, the guild lets you train your first levels in Assassination while in stealth mode, so you can sneak up and attack from behind. You can train it up to level 19 here. That takes 35 minutes, too.

Finally, you can train your Attack skill up to level 5, which is a pretty good start.

Actually, I haven’t mentioned this yet, but skills go up to level 100—and with a mod, up to level 500.

I haven’t done all the available training, but I’ll do the rest as I go. For now, let’s head to Heft.
