Ok so I stayed up until like 1:30am finishing this and now I’ve slept on it, I’m ready to share some rambling thoughts.
this started off ok for me. Yes, it’s the same premise as home before dark, more haunted house stuff (but not really) with similar characters but I was ready to look past it because I just love a spooky thriller read.
EXCEPT
The twists at the end. BRUH.
Really.
SO similar to previous work and also just WHAT. My brain was exploding with revelations trying to piece everything together, but not in a good way. In a way that felt like it was just shock value and WOAH instead of actually good writing. In saying this tho, I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to know everything and continue watching the train wreck that is the Hopes.
Kit was pretty unlikable for me and the teasing of the murders was kinda getting old the longer it went on. Sooo many times she said the same thing about being scared of Lenora/ Virginia and she becomes a bit obsessed with the case bc she sees herself in it?
Then her father is involved and the house is falling and everything’s happening people are dying, like, it’s a lot. I know it’s a thriller and the endings are always KAPOW but that just seemed like ……. A bit too much? Considering the pace of the rest of the book.
I’m really mixed on this because Altho it did make me a bit mad and some things were just ridiculous, I really wanted to continue reading? And isn’t that the sign of a good book?
I am conflicted af so I’ll give this a 3 star.
