Hey guys,
When I try to convince people to start to play Splinterlands, the best argument is: you can earn money while playing a fun game!
So I tought, let's write a post about several different ways in which you can earn cards, dec or SPS (which are the tokens of Splinterlands).
Splinterlands is an online collectable trading card game (TCG) which runs on the Hive blockchain. Unlike similar games such as Hearthstone or Pokémon TCG Online, in Splinterlands each individual card is a digital asset in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT.) In other words, each card is owned by the player and cannot be taken away by the people who are running the Splinterlands game. You are free to buy and sell cards on the open market or even rent them out to earn a passive income.
The game costs just $10 to join, which gets you a starter pack of 30 cards sufficient to begin playing. There is no obligation to spend any more money after that initial ten bucks. Like any TCG you're going to want to regularly expand your collection beyond the first 30 cards if you want to stay competitive in the game. In this post I'd like to show you six ways you can grind out free cards right now. Also check out the bonus tip at the end!

By simply doing a battle, you'll earn DEC. Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) is the name of the in-game currency for Splinterlands. If you're in the rank of Bronze II or higher, you'll earn dec for every game you play. This dec you can use aswell to buy some nice cards you want to improve your carddeck.
When playing Splinterlands, make sure that you're playing ranked battles. These will influence your rank. The higher the rank, the better the DEC rewards you will get!
These DEC can be used to buy assets in Splinterlands. Besides that you can always swap them aswell if you would prefer to cash out.
By far the easiest way to regularly obtain new cards is to complete the Daily Quest. Currently the daily quest is always the same: Win five ranked battles with a particular splinter. So you might get Earth splinter or Life splinter, for example. You simply hit the Ranked button in the Battle page and pick a team from the appropriate splinter. After five wins like this you will be able to claim your reward. You will get free Reward cards depending on the rank you hold when you claim your reward.
Here again the principle of the higher your rank, the better the rewards is applying as you can see in the image below.
Not only the amount of chests is varying depending on the rank, also the chanche of what's inside are different. In Silver and higher leagues, the chanches stay the same, 25% potions, 25% DEC and 50% cards. My advice here would be that it's best to be atleast in silver 3, since there the chanches for cards are already 50% per chest!
If you go to the Battle page you will see a countdown clock showing you when the current season ends. Each season lasts two weeks. At the end of a season each player receives a number of free Reward Cards depending on the highest league they achieved during that season. You don't have to maintain your position in that rank. For example, I've unlocked Silver III league last season which entitles me to 12 reward cards at the end of the season.
Participating in Splinterlands tournaments can give you some nice rewards when you have the cards to battle with the top players. As you can see in above image, at the moment of writing, there are over $80.000 in prizes.
Ofcourse it won't be that easy to win, but always remember: Practise makes perfect!
If you are that kind of a person who really wants to grind in his games, another way of earning DEC, is to be in the top 20 of a certain league. I'm personally in the Silver league and if you manage to place first at the end of the season, you will get 40.000 DEC which is at the moment of writing worth about $130!
While you're earning DEC and perhaps you bought some cards, you are actually earning FREE SPS airdrops at no cost to you (other than what you spent in cards, if any). This is a special promotion going on RIGHT NOW and will end after a year. We are about at day 213 of the 365 days, so now is the time to join, because you get those free SPS. The SPS is ANOTHER token that is actually WORTH MONEY, and you can sell it on the market!
Splintershards (SPS) is a new cryptocurrency governance token which will be integrated into the Splinterlands game in order to provide increasing levels of decision-making ability and control over the product to the player-base, asset owners, and other stakeholders.
You can check out the SPS whitepaper here: https://sps.splinterlands.com/
To get more out of the free SPS airdrops mentioned in point 6, you can stake the SPS.
You will than earn even more SPS from the free SPS that you already got. The SPS value has actually peaked at over a DOLLAR! At the time of writing this it's settled down again; however, where else do you earn free money? Who doesn't like free money at all?
As with the DEC, you can swap the SPS to your favourite currency so everyone can use it!
In Splinterlands it's possible to rent out your cards. This is a nice mechanic to earn some DEC of cards you aren't using at the moment. As you can see in the image below, the most expensive non gold-foil rental card is worth over $1.50 a day!
As with other assets, one can try to make a few buck by buying and selling the Splinterlands cards. With all investments, it isn't as easy as said, so some training and observation of trends is ned. Ofcourse this method always has some risks, if things go the other way around, you could lose some money aswell.
My personal favourite website to do so is https://peakmonsters.com/market where you can even place bids. This means that you can bid a certain amount of DEC and whenever someone would sell a card for that amount, you get it!
When you sign up to Splinterlands you will automatically get a Hive account. You can log into https://peakd.com/ (or one of the alternate interfaces like https://www.splintertalk.io/) and post blogs that will earn Hive cryptocurrency. This is how it works. First you make a post on PeakD, like the one you are currently reading. You will start to get upvotes on your post by people who enjoyed it. If you can promote your post on your Twitter, Facebook, etc... you will get more traffic to your post and potentially more upvotes. Seven days after you posted the article you will get paid out in cryptocurrency based on how many upvotes you got during that first week. You can then use that cryptocurrency to buy new cards.
There are several contests every day which you can enter and win new cards. Most of these contests are hosted here on PeakD. You can look for contests by scrolling through the trending posts using the Splinterlands hashtag.
You can also sometimes find contests running on YouTube. If you enter several contests per day you are bound to get a small trickle of extra free cards coming into your collection. Most of these contests will outright give you the card but sometimes you will win a delegation. If you win a delegation, someone will lend you a card or set of cards for a certain amount of time and then take the cards back. This can be useful to temporarily increase the strength of your deck. It often means that you will earn a higher rank than you could have gotten otherwise, which in turn means more daily and end-of-season reward cards. I have personally received about three free cards as well as some delegated cards in the past few weeks.
A special mention worth here is @clove71. When I just started playing Splinterlands, I discovered her on Twitch. She's an awesome streamer of Splinterlands. In her streams, she's hosting a lot of give-aways in which you can win FREE cards, dec and SPS. Probably that's the reason why people on Twitch are calling her 'SantaClove'.

Splinterlands has an referral program which rewards users who sign up new players. This is tracked through the use of a referral link. You will earn 5% commission on every verified purchase your referral spends in the game, including the initial $10 starter pack. For each person buying the starter kit using your referral link you will earn about 50 cents worth of credits. If someone that you referred decides to buy a $4 booster pack you will get 20 cents worth of credits. If one of your referrals buys $200 worth of booster packs you will get $10 worth of credits. Any rewards you earn through your affiliate link can be used to buy individual cards in the marketplace or booster packs from the shop. Of course you don't have to reinvest this revenue back into the game through buying cards. You can simply cash it out for your local currency on your preferred crypto exchange if that is your desire.

Sign up for Splinterlands using my referral link above and leave a comment here letting me know. Once I have verified the referral I will delegate you some cards as a free gift. :)
I am a person who discovered the Hive community in December 2021. I was looking for a new cardgame to play and eventually earn something in. After some research I discovered Splinterlands. Splinterlands is an innovative addition to the play-to-earn games in the NFT world. Previously known as Steem Monsters, the game operates on the Hive blockchain and belongs to the trading game genre. In Splinterlands, players fight against monsters to get in-game rewards.
I decided to pay the $10 after playing some matches for free. 10 bucks for a computergame seemed fair for me. At the moment I'm trying to build out my carddeck by playing the game and participating in the community. At the moment of writing, my $10 became already worth a multiple!
Thanks for reading my guide on how to earn FREE stuff in Splinterlands.
you can add Brawl fights that earn Merits and 2k Merits is a Gladiator Cases. That Gladiator cards count as Card power for your Ranked Games and also count as Airdrop-points and you can burn them and get the Dec value but better keep those Bloodlust beasts ;-). Great post
Oh yes, that's indeed a good addition. I can't brawl yet, so didn't think about it.
Thanks for the feedback! <3
great job
