Slight correction when re-reading this again.

I have been a (backup) witness for 4 years on Hive. The news is about running an API Hive node. Which is the thing that allows you (for example) to point apps to, and then the apps can get the right information from the blockchain.

Running only a Hive Witness node (which is what I have been doing for 4 years) is not sufficient for the apps to retrieve all the information.
