After 4 Years 🤯 my Dream Came True 🥹😳😭🙃🫡😍😎
(I can't believe I am making this post... so many emotions have crossed my mind while dedicating some more time at the beginning of this year. And oh boy... back then... I was SOOOOO NAIVE!)
💎 Learned SO Much! And 💖 to keep learning...
It was and is a realisation to get here... can't possibly point to how many people helped me understand so many things (without boring you all), even if 90% of the time I haven't bothered any with technical questions, many of you helped me understand a lot of things. This is what keeps me tied to this family... (and many other things)
All from an amazing place like this...
🤔 What am I talking about?
Well, back in 2021/22 New Year, I announced my comeback as a backup witness on Hive Blockchain as @atexoras.witness. And I still remember how that felt... 😎 back then, across many struggles of "time-machine" style things (aka IRL), in 2024/25 I have acknowledged how hard this was (and can be), but still demonstrated my motivation and the "never giving up" attitude.
I was being really me...
2026 is the year I am finally ON it!
Within this, I have met a LOT more Hive people than I had anticipated, across TWO IRL @hivefest's that I absolutely loved... and I would be lying if I didn't admit that they did actually helped huge with motivation.
But don't get me wrong, this was not easy (reaching this point)... especially because of my stubbornness of not wanting to bother anyone and learning on my own terms. Yes, I did ask a few things to some of the witnesses, but I think many can confirm that whatever I have asked was mainly related to verifications of my already formed opinions. That said, I think many of the top 100 witnesses (even some below that) are super mega powerful super beings just for being able to do this!
That said, please don't do as me... ask away! I just am this me, person that want to do trustless stuff.
But don't get me wrong... I know how to spot the difference in skill depth, both between me and others, and also between others themselves. Although the point of all this is not ranking or winning more than others within the same family, it's the collaborating, the trustless and decentralised building!

Back in the 2022 days... this was me thinking it was too exciting...

The 🥇 "New Zealand" based Public API Hive Node
I think I am the first one in my country... and I hope there will be more following in my footsteps... may the force be with us!

Note: 1.27.11 is shown on the swagger, but behind its 1.28.5 (people who know will know) - it will change sooonnnn when I move to the new version... currently on 1.28.6 release candidate challenges...
Please consider this a still young (hopefully not premature) experience, as even if I learned lots, I know I still have to learn lots more to be able to withstand something of quality for the entire world Hive community.
😏 Do you want to know how all this started?
I think it's about time to record this experience here, for anyone to validate.
Back in the days when I was playing lots of Hive games, I felt the need to learn more about how certain apps were being created. And I knew much of the information was on chain, so... back then, because I knew most of the information would be stored on Hive-Engine, I decided to give it a go...
Step by step, I brought a Hive Engine (full node) into the backup witnesses of the Hive Engine layer. And back then, my only intention was merely learning... Then, I stepped into the next challenge while doing so. Being in New Zealand, far away from all HiveD nodes, introduced a lot of latency, and I could not run my witness on Hive Engine reliably as I wished.
I have then decided to run again (as mentioned above) a witness node back in 2021/22 to support my own Hive-Engine node, on getting updated blocks from Hive.
Month by month, I had learned lots due to so many of the witnesses in there... eventually, my participation there brought me to continuously exploration and eventually through my own processess an great internet, provide a reliable HE Full node (even if that, for some, was just a full node for all this time, which for me was not, but I don't want to brag about it).
Then, at some point, I upgraded a few things on my servers and decided to also run a Hive Engine History node... one of the biggest challenges in terms of infrastructure performance improvements I had to make.
(please do consider that the data shown here is changing actively, and is not necessarily static)
The https://beacon.peakd.com is an open source tool from the @peakd team where everyone can contribute with. Once I am comfortable with my own API Hive node, I will add it there too!
But getting back to the scene, I have learned lots with many HE witnesses, especially and without any specific order of importance (sorry I have to give credit for this bunch of 🤗 people...), @reazuliqbal, @eonwarped, @primersion, @eturnerx, @rishi556 and @cryptomancer... You (but not limited to, and sorry for not mentioning all of you) contributed to part of what I am today in terms of Hive person.

Then, from across the MANY attempts to improve the things I had... the prospect was... aka the target... run things from New Zealand... even if at the start it was selfishly just for me to understand how hard it was for all the others!
WHY?
Well, the first thing I had in my mind was... "why is that game/apps struggle with access to Hive and Hive engine data?" - That made me realise that it was not just Hive Engine performance need. It was also Hive API access!
So, being a player who wanted sub-second asynchronous broadcasts and subsequent updates, I punched into my mind. HIVE FULL NODE it is!
There is a LOOOOTTTT OF PEOPLE I AM NOT MENTIONING here, and that sort of hurts... but they all crossed my learning curve, and I know WHO they are - just stating this... for the record.
Because it's just too much for a post like this. But I reached out to sooo many people that I "lost" count (not really, but you get my stance), and tried to help as much as I could. And will continue based on how I am feeling for doing the right thing for whom is trying to learn or striving for more future decentralised evolution.
Then in 2025 and 2026, it all changed 🤩
HiveD become super easy to run, and the rest of the infrastructure is going through a mega upgrade of performance and optimisation that allows me to prove this is sustainable even from home!
We can now run HiveD from an 8GB Android Linux thing... Obviously, that's not a full API node, but it proves how decentralised the chain can be.

Next steps? Be confortable it can be sustainable (within my own limits)... and then teach people or apps on either already allowed customized API's for their communication, to understand the right way to allow new API's like mine (not in a static, but instead in a failover way), by either automatic selection or manual failover methods.
Not yet for mass production, so please take it with a grain of salt, and please provide feedback.

Cool stuff. We need lots of people running nodes. I have thought about doing it myself. I know there are various types and I'd be interested in an article about those that includes the hardware requirements as well as some notes on how to get started. I know they can need some maintenance, but I'm up for learning about that.
I saw someone ran a Hive node on a Raspberry Pi, but I expect a small PC would be more capable.
BTW Your node processed my last 3speak video, so thanks for that!

The node "type" to just store the blockchain and provide blocks (including witnessing, which what blockchains call to "block verification" and "production", aka signing the next block with new transactions that need to be included), can be ran on a Raspberry Pi yes... I have one Orange Pi (16GB RAM), and you could even run it on a 8GB thing. All it needs is space to store the entire blockchain (if one wants to, because you can also now store just part of the blockchain), which is around 600GB, so a 1TB SSD will do for a big while.
But what I completed here, is a different beast. It includes extra stuff (I will try to bring a post about it) in order for me (if I want) to point "ANY" app into my own server and not need any other node to interact with those applications that allow for point to custom nodes.
In summary, with what we call a "witness node" that runs on a Raspberry Pi, you would not be able to do this (for most apps, but some that just need to get blocks will work). With an API Node, you can.
For example, this is me, interacting with BeeSwap, entirely using my New Zealand infrastructure. Both Hive and Hive Engine APIs.
(note, that people would need to add my nodes as they are not there by default)
Nice suggestions. Will try write something up and get feedback.
I'd have a bit of a learning curve as I've not really run any sort of server so there are networking issues as well as the Hive-specific ones. It obviously has to be visible to the internet. I don't expect to ever be a top witness, but I would like to give something back, but also to learn about these things.

I remember we were talking about exactly this topic in HiveFest, Split! I was curious how Liotes could run a HIVE API, but I didn't know that you are working on yours too! I also remember that Primersion was one of the people who was around, behind the stage, motivating us to do it... Well, it looks like motivation worked for you!
Happy to hear that it's up and running, and hopefully for a long time with 99.999% uptime! 😃 New Zealand is ready for the HIVE mass adoption! 🙂

I have never given up, just IRL stuff all the way, and some (LOTS !LOL) of distractions.
When I retire and if I still have the same brains, I am going to be sooooo much "blowing" up kind of guy. Maybe not, age is teaching me some stuff LOL
Anyhow, the internal motivation is the same, and yes, meeting you and all the folks helped hugely with motivation.
Always had this dream of showing that it does not matter where you are, you can just do it! (I confess that it's not just knowledge, but also some resources and knowing how to work with them). But ultimately its all about persistence and dedicating time to learn things.
There are LOTS OF them :D all open source on the hive repos... but reading them and understanding them is what takes time.
I am happy to engage with anyone who wants to start the journey. After all, this is my point on doing all this. Bringing more people to the dark side! !PIMP :P

I am happy to provide help if you ever need (I might learn from others for sure too). That's sort of how I started... but I will encourage you to have (if you can) an ISP that provides the freedom of IPv6 :D
ipv6 comes with the Ip4 ;) IPv6 /48 subnet , i already use my own router [ pfsense ] in a proxmox environment . it costs more each month but atleast i don't need to change my DNS settings every now and then .

Slight correction when re-reading this again.
I have been a (backup) witness for 4 years on Hive. The news is about running an API Hive node. Which is the thing that allows you (for example) to point apps to, and then the apps can get the right information from the blockchain.
Running only a Hive Witness node (which is what I have been doing for 4 years) is not sufficient for the apps to retrieve all the information.
Hopefully, this helps you understand a bit better. If not, ask away.

Refreshing to see someone build because they wanted better performance and decentralization.
Now I’m genuinely curious about the practical side:
What are the monetary or reward benefits of running this node long-term?
Does running a public API node itself generate any direct income?
Are there infrastructure incentives from Hive, or is it mainly reputation + potential future votes?
From the node itself and programmatically, nothing per say directly if not configured for that specific purpose (although it can, but I would not advise into this type of infrastructure).
An API Infrastructure "includes" (but I would run it separately for security reasons) what's called the HiveD code (basically the Hive Blockchain core code) that can be used to verify blocks (witnessing). When you enable your node as a witness node, people can then "vote" for your witness and once you node is scheduled to verify a block, it will do it, and gain some HIVE reward in form of Powered Up HIVE.
Having that said, and this is my opinion, when witnesses also run Hive API nodes, they are helping with decentralization for the entire ecosystem, as the more decentralized infrastructure exists across the world, and that should help with the apps independence which can take advantage of more nodes for their calls (NOTE that big/complex apps should ideally run their own Hive API nodes, although that would not be technically required).
And "naturally" if a witness is helping the ecosystem, that will potentially suggest the Hive community that you are trying to help the blockchain, and that might result on people to potentially vote for that witness and the higher you are on the witnesses list (excluding the top20 where everyone produces the same amount), in what is called, "a backup witness" the more regularly you will sign blocks, and therefore more HIVE generated from your node block verifications.
Hopefully I answered this above.
You can create a proposal if you think your support to the community should attract payments from the DHF (a DAO voted by the community Staked HIVE). You can check current proposals here https://peakd.com/me/proposals (anyone can create proposals). Once a proposal is above what's called the "Return Proposal", you can start receiving the funds requested from the DHF pool.
Reputation is (in my view) is one of the hardest things to protect as a witness and also something very easy to get damaged if you are not responsible for your actions and don't do your best to protect the chain.
In conclusion, being a witness, and running an API infrastructure does not per si get you more votes or rewards. But depending on what you do to help the ecosystem, people will accordingly curate that value towards their interpretation of what you do.
Although this is probably one of the biggest privileges I ever had on participating on a decentralized worldwide blockchain where I have leaned tons on!
