When I was 17 I started taking driving lessons and also practised in my father's car, but then I decided to go hitchhiking around Europe and stopped paying for driving lessons to save up for that. I never took the test, but I certainly used the indicator every time when I was learning to drive.
Here in Hiroshima, indicator use is a bit erratic. Most people use them most of the time, but quite a large percentage don't bother.

Oh, that's interesting! I would never guess that Japanese people don't obey to traffic rules!
Quite a few have a flexible interpretation of traffic lights and zebra crossings too!
