The story of Ghost Horse Island and SS Alice Hackett on Lake Huron

(edited)

In the year 1828 the Schooner “Alice Hackett” was lost in a November Storm off the southern tip of Manitoulin Island on Lake Huron, Canada.

The Metis Voyageurs travelling from Drummond Island to Penetanguishene on the Schooner were rescued but much of the cargo including many Farm animals did not survive except one White Horse that swam to shore.

200 years later this white phantom ghost horse can be seen running along the sandy beaches of Ghost Horse Island ….

The Ghost:

For years following the wreck, sailors and boaters passing the island reported seeing a phantom white horse running along the shore. Because of these sightings, Fitzwilliam Island became locally known as Horse Island or Ghost Horse Island.
