Little Eyes by Samanta Schweblin

I think my chief problem with this story is that it was more interesting as a concept than what it became. As many others said, I think it had a lot of great potential as a plot idea. Omegle on wheels? Colour me intrigued! But the execution just sort of fell flat in a way that didn't feel satisfying to see resolved.

To break it down further, the characters didn't feel real to me. The short single-chapter stories I think were the most interesting because there was little room to expand and create problems. The author was forced to convey depth in a limited window and it paid off. The old folks in Barcelona made me sad, I actually lingered on this chapter because it really felt promising for the themes that could be represented in this book. The Sierra Leone - Hong Kong one where the kentuki was being tossed around at a rave or something was super rad, this brief glimpse into another life like a vignette of the human experience. I LOVED Buenos Aires, where the kentuki threw itself from the room after the death of the uncle. That was emotionally evocative!
