Eloquence (from French eloquence_ from Latin eloquentia) is the quality of speech or writing that is marked by fluency, elegancy, and persuasiveness. It is also defined as one of the aims of formal oratory and, in this context, refers to the artistic expression of the speech as opposed to its argumentation.
Eloquence is both a natural talent and improved by knowledge of language, study of a specific subject to be addressed, philosophy, rationale and ability to form a persuasive set of tenets within a presentation.
"True eloquence," Oliver Goldsmith says, "Does not consist ... in saying great things in a sublime style, but in a simple style; for there is, properly speaking, no such thing as a sublime style, the sublimity lies only in the things; and when they are not so, the language may be turgid, affected, metaphorical, but not affecting.
I have always found amusing, the ability to communicate and convey one's ideas in a convincing way, to get your way around things with chat, charisma, clearly and with intention. Rhetoric is another aspect of that where you study persuasion in of itself.
It is one of the three ancient arts of discourse trivium along with grammar and logic. As an academic discipline within the humanities, rhetoric aims to study the techniques that speakers or writers use to inform, persuade, and motivate their audiences. Rhetoric also provides heuristics for understanding, discovering, and developing arguments for particular situations. I mean you can justify anything if you are good enough at it. And you can try for the logical and dialectical - by dialogue - way for argumentation as well.
But i think Persuasion might be the pinnacle of the eloquence endeavor. Since persuasion is all about influencing one's beliefs, attitudes, motivations, or behaviors. Persuasion is studied in many disciplines. As we've seen Rhetoric studies modes of persuasion in speech and writing and is often taught as a classical subject. Meanwhile, Psychology looks at persuasion through the lens of individual behavior, on a side note, in the book of Hannibal, it is shown he was particularly fond of studying a person to kill them with persuasion, despite hating psychology studies mere existence. How ironic. Well... moving on! and neuroscience studies the brain activity associated with this. History and political science are interested in the role of propaganda in shaping historical events as we can see everywhere all the time all at once. In business, persuasion is aimed at influencing a person's (or group's) decision in capitalism for profit, it's precise and can use multiple methods to achieve this, this gets even more interesting once you take a look at business culture and rich or elite conduct as groups, the masks put on to work, for leadership but also for influence. It starts to look like a gambling game.
On a simpler note, Persuasion is also often used to pursue personal gain, such as selling, elections, lawyer, or even convincing someone to do something in daily life. It's a scary and incredible power that shifts and plays in our lives every single day. It is a core part of etiquette, since you wanna convince someone of the way you hold yourself. And eloquence, since there's nothing more enchanting in the art of words then bending reality to you own will only by watching, learning and reacting. This is the simplification of Hannibal's power, along with practice and memory. Therefore, the whole point of this text was going through multiple articles on the internet to try to understand the theory behind that since i have always been amused by communicators. In general, not only the psychopath ones. Although they are pretty good at this. Anyway, i hope you learned something today with me and if it isn't clear, i'm also recommending a series of books by Thomas Harris today. Bye bye.
Love the focus on eloquence! 🐎 Adds a whole new layer to the stables and strategy. ✨
