I used to think money changes people.
Then I watched it happen to people I know, and now I’m not so sure.

some years back, my neighbours dad got promoted. Big jump. From a regular job to a manager role with double the salary.
Before that, he was the uncle who would sit with all of us, crack jokes, and buy puff-puff and cold zobo without letting us fight over it.
Humble. Grounded. "My pikin, money is not everything" type.

Fast forward to some months.
New car. New iPhone every time. New circle.
He stopped coming to village meetings and church programs. "Too busy with work, my pikin."
When the church needed donations to fix the roof, he said "I’ll send it next week." Next week never came.
But he was posting Dubai trips and big restaurant dinners every month.

Everyone said: "Na money change am." Money changed him.

But here’s the thing that’s been bothering me.
Even before the promotion, he was the one who would argue over ₦500 with the market woman.
Even before the promotion, he was the one who would brag about "my guy at the top" and look down on others.
The money didn’t create those things. It just gave him the freedom to act on them without consequences.

I’ve seen the opposite too.
My friend’s uncle. He started a small business. Now he’s doing really well.
But he still pays school fees for 2 kids in our area. Still sits with his workers, shares rice and stew, and gists with them.
Money gave him more power. And he used that power to do more of what he already believed in.

So I’ve come to this conclusion:
Money is like a megaphone.
If you’re kind, it makes you kinder. You can donate, help, lift people.
If you’re selfish, it makes you more selfish. You can isolate, ignore, and build walls.
If you’re fake, it buys you a bigger stage to be fake on.

Financial success doesn’t rewrite your character. It removes the filters.
When you’re broke, you have to be nice to everyone. You have to wait. You have to adjust.
When you have money, you don’t have to do anything. So you do what you want to do.
And that "want" was always there.

That’s why some people are scared of money sometimes. Not because of the money, but because of what it will reveal about them.....
