Rituals, Society, and the Cost We Ignore

Do you think human inventions are always beneficial for the entire humanity? I am not talking about inventions like smartphones or other technologies like that. I am talking about the invention of rituals.
For example, today one of the inventions that is rapidly taking place is the type of marriages found across the world. There are destination weddings. There are weddings with rituals that were never seen before.
There are weddings with so many ceremonies. First the engagement ceremony, then many more ceremonies follow. If you are from India, you will understand exactly what I am talking about.
This is how the wedding scenario is completely changing. The reason why I am talking about this is because earlier weddings were quite simple and not very costly.
But today, when a father wants to marry his daughter or his son, it becomes very difficult for him to arrange everything because it takes lakhs of rupees to meet the standards that society has created.
Now, ideally, a father should ignore these standards and do what he can afford. But the reality is that people do things based on how society functions, and that is why they try to cope with the standards set by society itself.
For example, sadly, people have created a norm where giving a four wheeler to the husband of their daughter has become common. I am strictly against dowry, and I believe it should be stopped.
It is not something that should stop only after making laws or rules. It should stop because of our moral responsibility as human beings. Especially in cases where a father has to take loans with heavy interest just to fulfill the demands of the other party.
Apart from weddings, there are many more rituals in the name of birthday celebrations and festival celebrations, where people are simply wasting money in the name of happiness.
Some people even label these practices as religious. But if you go back 50 to 100 years, you will not find many of these practices existing at that time.
So what are your thoughts on these practices and rituals, and the new inventions of how people celebrate birthdays or how they celebrate the arrival of a new life?
I am not totally against celebrations, but I do feel that many of these practices might not be very beneficial for mankind. Maybe the same amount of money could be used for something more meaningful.
That is what I feel is the right approach, but I would really like to know the thoughts of others as well, especially the people reading this.
