You know that question, "Are you fit?" I hear it sometimes, and honestly I just smile. I mean, am I 100% fit? Maybe not. But am I trying? Yes, definitely. Fitness for me is not about having six-packs or lifting the heaviest in the gym, it's just about staying active, feeling better and taking care of myself in the middle of life’s wahala (problems).
Most people don’t even know I go to the gym. Well, that’s because I don’t post gym selfies or videos like some others. I don’t go everyday, but when I get the chance, I try to show up. Some days it’s early morning, other days it’s evening. Sometimes I just walk in and stretch for 30 mins and I’m off. Not because I’m lazy, but because even showing up is a win for me.
There was a time I was working round the clock, I mean just work, work and more work. No breaks, no rest, I even forgot what a walk felt like. My body started showing signs, my back was paining, my sleep was short, and I felt like I was aging too fast. That’s when I told myself “Omo, you need balance oh.” That was my turning point.
I didn’t start big. I began with short walks in the evening, just to clear my head. Then a friend invited me to a small gym close to my house. I joined him one Saturday and that was it. Now the gym has become part of me, like a part time friend I visit once in a while.
One thing I’ve learnt is that fitness is not one size fits all. Some people run, some people do yoga, others dance or swim. Me? I do small weights, treadmill, then some ab workouts. I'm not the best, but I show up. And that has helped me mentally and physically.
I won’t lie, I still eat junk sometimes, and I love sweet things (who doesn’t?). But at least I try to balance it. I drink water more now, cut down on soda, and sometimes I surprise myself by choosing fruit over fried meat. It’s all about small wins, right?
Fitness for me is not to impress anybody. I’m not training to become a model or anything. I’m just trying to live well, stay healthy and be in control of my body. Life is already stressful, why add health wahala to it?
So, am I fit? Maybe not like a pro, but I’m on the journey and that’s what matters. I’m proud of the little efforts I make. And if you’re reading this and you’ve been thinking of starting your own fitness routine, start small. No pressure. Even 15 mins walk daily can do wonders.
I’m still learning. Still pushing. Still trying to create time from my busy life just to move this body and stay healthy. It’s not easy, but I’m not giving up anytime soon.
Thanks for reading my random fitness talk, maybe I needed to just remind myself too that I’m doing okay.
