How Much Money Is Enough to Stop Worrying?

I have lived on this earth for a while now, and I can tell you that money doesn’t wade off worry. Worry is a state of mind where your thoughts constantly feel uneasy or anxious about the future. It’s when you have everything in your power but still feel uncertain, afraid of losing them, or when you don't feel any satisfaction in all you have that worry shows up.

Many people often believe and think that once they have enough money in their account, all their worries will disappear. I used to feel this way too, thinking that having a certain amount of money, let’s say about $10,000 would make me live the life I wanted and travel to different places of my choice.

But I came to realise that this isn’t true at all.

The truth is that money plays an important role in meeting our needs and making life comfortable and less stressful, but it doesn’t automatically bring peace. You’d hear people complaining of a deep hole in them, like a longing for something else to fill it, even when they have everything.

You can have all the money in the world and still feel an empty void inside of you. On the other hand, some have very little and still live with a kind of peace and contentment that wealth can’t buy.

So, the question: how much do I really need to live a free life and not worry isn’t one I dwell too much on, because freedom isn’t just about having financial security; it’s about having inner peace. If an individual thinks their happiness and peace depend entirely on money, they’d be shocked to find that they would always be chasing more.

Abraham Maslow opined that human needs are insatiable, and so, the more money one has, the more they crave for money which would never stop.

The odds that money would stop one from worrying are quite low. In fact, having more money equals more responsibilities. You’d see yourself going into more investments to manage, more people to take care of, and more decisions to make.

That’s why even the rich worry too. Despite having it all, they have no peace and suffer from sleepless nights. Though their worries may differ, they still exist, and sometimes even more than those who have less.

What do we actually need to not worry about? This isn’t money at all, but contentment. The Bible gives a beautiful answer in Proverbs 30:8–9 (NIV):

“Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonour the name of my God.”

I love this scripture so much, and it’s a prayer we all must learn to make each day. It captures balance and contentment. The verse teaches that the goal is not having much or lacking, but in having what would be sufficient for each day and it is the point where you have enough to live and still depend on God.

Here is my stance: money doesn’t chase off worry, and it’s never the key to living freely. Finding true freedom and peace comes from a deep understanding of the peace of God that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Trust me, when you find that peace, you automatically stop worrying, not because you have all you want, but because you trust and depend on the One who provides what you truly need for each day. This is something I am living by each day, and worrying has been something I keep trying not to make happen and it has always worked up till now.

I completely agree with you on this my friend. Money is good, but it does not take away the problems of the heart. It is in fact peculiar to both the rich and the poor; thus, there is noone without problems. Thank you so much for sharing, I enjoyed reading through

Yes, there is none without problems; both the rich and the poor. Money cannot take away worries, it adds to it.

Money can make life easier, but it can’t give peace of mind. True peace comes from being happy with what you have and trusting God. I love the verse you shared; it also reminded me of a friend who used to pray that God shouldn’t make him rich, but he should give him the ability to open doors that his mates are opening.

Absolutely true. Money doesn't guarantee peace of mind.

I think that deep hole can't be filled by anything in this external world no matter how much money we have or anything else for that matter. Ironically and sometimes, the more money we have, the bigger the hole tends to get. Aligning ourselves with God could be the way to go about mending this deep hole.

Exactly. You have said it all and I appreciate this.

You know sometimes we have the money and still won't solve the problem we have, money can not buy real love and it won't buy peace of mind and most of all it can not be paid off to death so that someone can live forever, no matter how wealthy, we can still have our worries.

That is true. You cannot even bribe death no matter how much you have.
