We live in a world where staying focused has become one of the biggest challenges people face. Everywhere you turn to, there is something trying to pull your attention away.
One of the greatest distraction which I believe is something that pulls people's attention the most is the social media with it's endless scrolling, constant notifications from our phones pop up every few minutes, entertainments from celebrities and even our daily responsibilities which often compete with one another. It sometimes feels like the world is designed to just distract us. But over time, I have come to realize that staying focused is not just about the willpower but it is about creating habits and building systems that make it easier for me to pay more attention to what really matters.
One of the things I do to avoid most of this distractions especially when it has to do with social media and phone in general is to control my environment. The place where I do my work and study plays a big role in how much I can concentrate. One thing that mostly distract me during work or study is when my phone is close to me. If my phone is beside me and constantly buzzing, it is almost impossible not to pick it up. So, I usually turn off unnecessary notifications and sometimes even keep my phone out of sight when I'm working. There are times I go to my phone settings and block some apps and distracting websites from sending me notification so that I am not tempted to click on the apps and website and waste time.
I also realized that my mind cannot stay for long hours without rest. With too much workload, I easily get distracted especially when I'm under pressure. So I do is, try to balance work with little breaks. If I work for some minutes or hours, I'll take a short break to stretch or walk around. This keeps me from burnout. When I divide my time into smaller chunks, I find it easier to maintain focus instead of feeling overwhelmed by many tasks.
Another thing I do is to be self aware of what I'm doing at a particular time. Distractions are not only external but sometimes come from within us. My thoughts can wander, and I may find myself thinking about unrelated things at a moment I'm supposed to be concentrating on a task. When this happens, I train myself to notice it quickly and return to the task at hand. Sometimes I pause for a minute and tell myself, guy focus on what you are doing, bring your mind to reality and finish your task. With that, I find myself concentrating back to what I was doing.
I even create routines that make me focus much easier. I have found that when I do certain tasks at the same time every day, they almost become automatic. I created a daily time table for most task I know I usually do every time. With that, I can remain focus and because my mind is already adapted to the routine, most time it remind itself of what I'm supposed to do at a particular moment.
Of a truth, as long as we are in this world, we cannot do away with distraction. The best thing to do is learning how to manage this distractions. I stay focused by creating systems that protect my attention. These systems help me direct my energy toward the things that truly matter rather than unnecessary distractions.
