Where I stay, the weather is usually unpredictable. Sometimes it’s cool, sometimes the heat just decides to show itself without warning. This year, I’d say the heat hasn’t been as bad as what we’ve faced in the past, but once in a while, we still get those extremely warm days that make everything feel uncomfortable.
I’ve noticed that anytime the heat comes, it changes my mood, my energy, even how I sleep. So over time, I’ve figured out a few simple and personal ways that help me manage it. They might not be anything big, but these small steps really make a difference for me.
Indoor Mornings, Outdoor Evenings
One trick I’ve started using is switching my timing. On hot days, I try to stay indoors during the late morning to early afternoon. That’s usually when the heat is at its highest. If I have to run errands or step out, I move it to evening time when the sun is going down. The air is cooler then, and I feel less tired doing things outside.
Iced Cloth on the Wrist
Something I picked from a friend last year was keeping a small towel in the freezer. I take it out and place it around my wrist or neck when the heat is just too much. It’s one of the quickest ways I’ve found to cool down the body fast. Just a few minutes of that can make a big difference, especially when I’m trying to sleep at night.
Avoiding Overthinking & Overworking
This might sound strange, but I’ve realised that on hot days, overthinking or doing too much physical work makes it worse. So I try to keep my mind calm, avoid too much stress, and slow things down a bit. I even reduce screen time because phones and laptops add to the heat sometimes.
Dark Curtains and Open Windows
In my room, I use thick curtains during the day to block the sunlight, and in the early morning and evening, I open all the windows to allow fresh air to pass through. This reduces the stuffiness and helps the room feel more bearable. It’s a small thing, but it really helps manage the indoor heat.
Staying Hydrated
Of course, water is important, but I’ve made it more fun. Sometimes I add mint leaves or make a light cucumber water mix. It just gives the water a fresh taste and keeps me wanting to drink more. I’ve also noticed that when I’m hydrated, my body doesn’t feel as tired under the heat.
We don’t get these hot days all the time, but when we do, they can be really frustrating. That’s why I’ve chosen to be more intentional about how I handle it. No one likes being uncomfortable in their own space, so I do what I can to stay cool, physically and mentally.
What about you? How do you deal with heat when it comes knocking?
