Diys help you save money

One or two days ago I read something on someone’s blog I already knew intuitively. I think it’s something most of us know already, honestly, but we fail to remember and practice it.

I wrote this post on my main account yesterday talking about the minimalist lifestyle and how living a minimalist life could help us save some extra money.

If you take a good look at the things we spend money on, you’ll realize that close to 50% of the things we buy or services we pay for, are actually things we can do ourselves with no hustle.

That’s where Do It Yourself (DIYs) come in. Doing all the petty stuff yourself and giving away that money you consider chicken change to another person to do them for you. Man I really need to take my own advice on this one.

I think why most people would rather pay for most of these things they can do themselves than actually do it themselves is because they don’t really see the value of the money they’re paying. What’s a dollar or two to buy that fast food outside, right?

Problem is that when we spend like this, we’re only factoring in the effect on our pockets momentarily, forgetting a compounding effect from the fact that we buy that same fast food every other day. So it’s not just a dollar, but a dollar multiplied by each day you eat outside for 365 days if you’re looking at the impact over a year.

Making a homemade meal is not that difficult. I’m not at expert at cooking, but I know it’s not.

How about the laundry you take to laundry service to pay that $3 “chicken change for?

I get that sometimes you can’t always do things yourself because you need time to handle other stuff. In those cases it’s totally understandable why you would hire another person to do some things for you. But otherwise, do things yourself and save that chicken change to compound and you’ll be happy you did.
