We Need To Stop Victimisation In Society

One day, my cousin was harassed while coming back from work and was nearly violated by some guys with a negative mindset around our neighbourhood. What was her crime? We were all puzzled. Then, she was doing her National Youth Service with a financial institution.

That day, she came back around 9 pm (WAT) because of the heavy traffic. While she was passing around a dimly lit spot, a group of males cornered her and started dragging her to an uncompleted building, while also hitting her with items and trying to violate her.

Light shone on her when someone shone light on that spot as the person was passing, not even knowing what was happening. At that point, those guys thought the person was coming towards them with the light and took to their heels. My cousin, though injured to some extent, summoned the courage to run for her dear life.

What was her crime? Was she dressed poorly? No. Was she dressed shabbily? No, it was an issue of bad intention. Those guys already had a premeditated mindset to hurt people that day, and it happened that she coincidentally fell into that range because she came home late, which was not an intentional act on her part to come late. The traffic caused that.

Though there is a saying that one should dress the way they wish to be addressed. We can also attract danger and bad will when we dress inappropriately or break certain dress codes, especially on occasions where a dress code or style is instructed. For example, in churches where certain dresses are not allowed or in schools, and even at cultural or professional events. If one breaks the dress code, the bouncers may send them out.

A Happy And Safe Society Is Possible

Ultimately, people should be able to exercise their right to freedom without fear. Again, individuals should be able to control themselves from hating on each other. The clothes worn by an individual, or how they wear them, should not give another the right to humiliate, attack, or violate their rights.

Instead, we should respect boundaries, mind our business, live a well-cultured life, and respect other people's decisions. That way, we would make the world a better place.
