Welcome to my blog π€π€ happy weekend to you all
Among all the traditions I have seen and pexperienced, the Igbo traditional wedding, Igba Nkwu, holds a very special place in my heart. To me, it is not just a marriage ceremony it is a celebration of love, culture, family and community all woven together

Every time I attend oneI feel a sense of pride in being Igbo and in the beauty of our heritage
One of the most unique aspects of the Igbo traditional wedding is how it goes beyond the couple It is never just about two people it is about two families coming together to become one.
The process starts with the introduction and bride price negotiation. Outsiders may think of it as transactional but for us it is a sign of respect It is a way of acknowledging the brideβs family and showing gratitude for raising her well I always love how the elders handle this part sometimes serious, sometimes playful but always with wisdom
The moment that touches me the most is the palm wine ritual
The bride, beautifully dressed in traditional attire with beads and head tie, is handed a cup of palm wine by her father.
With grace and shy smiles she walks through the crowd, searching for her groom Everyone watches in anticipation.
When she finally finds him and offers him the cup, and he drinks from it, the whole place erupts with joy
That simple act seals their union before family, friends, and even the ancestors
Each time I witness it, I get goosebumps it is such a powerful and emotional moment
The atmosphere of an Igbo traditional wedding is always lively.
There is music, drumming, singing, and dancing.
The food flows without end jollof rice, pounded yam, pepper soup, abacha, and many others. Strangers and friends alike are welcomed to eat and celebrate.
That sense of generosity and community spirit is something I cherish deeply
It reminds me that marriage is not just between two individuals but an affair of the entire community.
For me personally, the Igbo traditional wedding is more than just a cultural event it is a connection to my roots. In a world where many are drifting towards western-style weddings,
Igba Nkwu reminds me that our way is equally beautiful meaningful and rich in symbolism It is a celebration that honors love, family and tradition all at once
Whenever I think of this tradition, I feel proud and hopeful. I know that when my time comes I would want to honor it too, not just for myself but as a way of keeping the culture alive for the next generation.
The Igbo traditional wedding means so much to me because it is a living reminder that our culture is vibrant, our families are our strength, and our traditions are treasures that should never be forgotten
