Dyatlov Pass: Mystery in the Mountains

As we all understand that mountains are very beautiful places to be but also very dangerous where many mysterious things can occur. Today I am going to discuss one of the most shocking and baffling events in history that is the Dyatlov pass incident. And that occurred in 1959 in Ural Mountains of Russia where nine veteran hikers were killed in very mysterious situations. After all these years and various investigations no one can tell exactly what transpired that night. So allow me to take you through this chilling mystery that puzzled investigators, scientists and conspiracy theorists over the decades.

Well and first of all explaining the background I should mention the case of group of nine students and graduates of the Ural Polytechnic Institute who decided to go skiing expedition in Northern Ural Mountains. They were all experienced hikers and skiers and they have made numerous trips before hence this was not the first time in the mountains. The team was headed by an 23-year-old engineering major and student Igor Dyatlov whose name is since given to the location of the accident. They began their trip in late January 1959 and all was going well until they arrived at a mountain named Kholat Syakhl translating to Dead Mountain in the local language. And this very name is extremely creepy and perhaps it was the warning that they should not visit there.

Now when I speak of what had happened on that terrible night on the 1st of February. The group pitched the tent against the mountain slope despite the fact that experienced hikers do not camp in mountain slopes as they tend to do in sheltered locations. Some reason or other they chose to camp there. Then there was that thing that happened in the night, causing all the nine to tear open their tent inside and dash out to the frozen night naked with no decent clothing. Well this is the most enigmatic part since the temperature was approximately at minus 25 to 30 degrees Celsius and running out in cold without jackets and boots is a sure death. So whatever frightened them must have been immeasurably horrible.

Well the hikers were expected to send telegram on their way back but when they failed to get in touch with anyone search party was dispatched to get them back. And what was discovered in search was very troubling and perplexing. The tent was discovered empty and ripped inside with all their resume food and warm clothes still in. And then they discovered the traces of snow foot towards tent to forest. The footprints indicated that there were those that were barefooted some in socks and those with one boot. Well I would be saying that this is nonsense since why should the experienced hikers go and run into deadly cold without the proper clothing unless something really terrible was going on.

And poorly the bodies were discovered at various places and in various states. The first two were located in the area of tree line below large cedar tree and they were dressed in underwear. And the odd thing was there were broken branches on the tree indicating that somebody climbed the tree because of something or to get away out of something. Then another three bodies such as that of Igor Dyatlov were discovered between the tent and cedar tree that they had attempted to go back to tent but had died of hypothermia. But the most disastrous findings were still to come in the form of four bodies that were located two months afterward buried in snow in ravine. And these were bodies with severe injuries such as broken head, broken bones and one woman had no tongue and eyes.

People will think and say now what killed them what was so scary that they went out of tent. Well there exists numerous theories concerning this some of them are reasonable and some are just nuts. The first one is the theory of avalanche that avalanche struck their tent and they were forced to flee. The difficulty with this theory however is that tent was not destroyed in avalanche it was cut inside. And even the slope was not so steep that avalanche could take place. There are so many facts which are not explained by this theory. Well I know very little about avalanches but I know that in case there is avalanche, there should be more trace of it.

Well and another theory is that they were killed by Mansi tribe of natives. This seemed like a sacred area of the Mansi people and perhaps they did not want foreigners in the area as they were hiking. But locals Mansi said they had nothing to do with this happening and the footprints discovered were of the nine hikers of no one. Such theory is also unrealistic. But again I would say that there might have been some conflict we do not know about but once again there is no concrete evidence.

Well a few of the people think it was military testing. It might also be that hikers stumbled upon something that should not be seen at all since Soviet Union at that time was conducting numerous experiments that were secret. And even certain bodies were strangely tan in orange and their garments contained high amounts of radiation. This makes theory of military testing more realistic. However, of course, Soviet government refused all this and told that it is natural disaster. Well we all know how secretive Soviet Union was and maybe these guys are hiding something but we will never know what it is.

And even more importantly that a Russian government has opened investigation in 2019 and found that avalanche was the cause. However, this explanation is not believed by many people among them relatives of victims since it does not answer all questions. Why were they cut tent inside, why were they running so far out of tent, why were they so seriously wounded, why was there radiation on clothing of some. There are so many open cases yet to be solved and that is why the Dyatlov Pass incident remains one of the biggest mysteries of all times.

We all know that what occurred on that mountain was completely horrifying and the lives of those nine youths were horrific deaths. Be safe on nature and admire the strength of mountains since there are things which we are not able to see and know.
