Buying food or cooking at home, which is a most frugal means?

Hello Hive.

IMG_20230716_133130_185.jpg

Today I want to share with us my experience on how I had wanted to embark on a market experiment to check out the best way in which we can save cost.
Which is cheaper between cooking for oneself and buying food to eat out?

IMG_20230716_133039_958.jpg

My mum was always kicking against eating our,she says that only lazy fingers allow someone else make their meals. And while we might be lazy sometimes, other times it is not about laziness but not having enough time to cook.

So I went on a Pricing spree at the market.

IMG_20230716_133142_481.jpg

I had wanted to prepare rice and stew with meat.

The ingredients I needed were

Rice

Vegetables oil

Tomatoes and onions
Pepper
Meat/fish
Spice, curry,thyme, seasoning maggi

  • 7 tin milk of rice cost 1100
  • A 75cl bottle of vegetable oil cost 1000

IMG_20230716_133159_567.jpg

  • Maggi cost 250 for 24cube sachet
  • Salt 70
  • Tomatoes I will be needing one that cost at least 1000 since only 5 pieced of tiny tomatoes cost 200 naira

IMG_20230716_132731_362.jpg

  • 200 naira onions will be enough.

  • 200 pepper will be enough as well.

I have gone to the market and purchased all of these ingredients
Which had cost me roughly 7000 to embark on my cooking before I had an emergency that made me abandon the project. Lucky enough I had a neighbor who was in need and had nothing to eat for the day. She came to ask for support and I ended up passing the items to her.
The project was meant to be a Sunday meal for my family, I will be feeding 5 people with the meal from that shopping list to be compared with buying meal for 5peoole from a restaurants.

Now that times are hard, we have to learn to spend wisely and make every penny we spend worth it. I learnt this from a friend, my dear @tergan and learning about living a frugal life everyday is really paying out for me.

I have to say that I have always found it more frugal to eat home as opposed to eating out, but, there are so many factors involved. I can usually make more than one meal (or parts of) with the ingredients needed for one meal. I can buy inexpensive cuts of meat or ingredients and make them into something special.

But, when it is about time, this doesn't always work.

Because I have a freezer available, I freeze portions so that I have them available when I don't have time.

Eating out, usually fast food here in the US has not only gotten expensive, but, prepared in unhealthy ways (many times) but better than it used to be. Eating at restaurants (here in the US) is expensive. I can only use examples around here to be fair. So, for me, eating at home is a much better deal. Lunches, and even breakfast. Breakfast is expensive to eat out here, but, if you read posts, the world eats breakfast out, so presumably, it would be cheaper.

Thanks for taking us along with you!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

So about £7 in the UK, or £1.40 per person, plus you would have spices and seasonings available for another time. It looks like the cheapest to eat out would be fast food meal deals or fried chicken and chips, coming in at about £4 per person, and not as high quality food either. Good to cook at home 😍

0E-8 BEE

Exactly...

I heard that a place of rice and chicken here cost about 1500naira/$1.89 and that's a meal for just one person.

I will actually drop by within the week to see the quantity of such meals.
But I totally agree that it is cheaper to cook at home.. Just that it may not be too convenient if we have too many schedule.

Yes, there are often competing priorities for our time (because there is also shopping, preparing, cooking and cleaning up as well as eating 😂); maybe we could share the burden with our neighbours? One day they cook for everyone, another day you do.

I think in most cases it is definitely cooking at home. Buying and eating out can be costly and one can't usually vet for the quality of the food. Apart from the time constraints, cooking at home seems more preferable imo.

I always advise eating at home, not only is it less expensive, it is healthy too.

That's true, not all restaurants food are neat

For me cooking at home is better because you can see the ingredients and it is cheaper than buying food outside which is costs more

That's true for me too

I do agree that by cooking at home we can save money. We can also choose the taste we want for the dish.

0E-8 BEE

That's true.
And I am quite picky with different dishes.

Thanks for stopping by.
